Take a look at our lineup tips for Daily Fantasy Sports – Northern Trust Open on the PGA Tour:
The Course
Ridgewood Country Club is the locations of this week’s Northern Trust Open. It is a Par 71, 7300-yard course that hasn’t been played a ton in the past. We do have some background knowledge on the course, but it isn’t a course that we see every year. The course is a tree-lined, bunker-filled course that really should challenge every part of a golfers game. I would say since it is tree-lined and the rough is thick, we should target more accuracy guys than bombers. It seems as though most guys will hit a lot of irons off the tee if they feel more comfortable with it because it shouldn’t really penalize them. I think that par 4 scoring and approach shots are the biggest keys here. The par 5’s here aren’t a complete birdie fest with the occasional eagle, so most guys should be in similar positions on the par 5’s even. I think that being in the fairway with the ability to knock the ball close to the pin on the approach is how players will really thrive here.
The Players
It is good to note that there are less people in this field than normal (120 instead of 150), so the 6 of 6 percentage should be higher than normal. You will have to get 6 of 6 through to the weekend to have any chance to have a big score on the weekend.
Tiger Woods seem like he fits this course a lot. His driving accuracy has been bad, but his accuracy with hitting his irons into the fairway. What I like about this spot most for Tiger is the approach shots. He showed 2 weeks ago that he may be the best iron player on Tour right now and that could put him in a great spot this week. You must hit the ball close here to really capitalize on these holes and Tiger should be able to do that here.
Jordan Spieth is starting to lose momentum in the betting market and its right when he actually showed that he may be returning to the old Spieth. The one that sprays the ball all over the place and then is a wizard at getting out of trouble. Now, with the way Spieth has hit irons and even the driver recently, I think its viable that these short game struggles actually turn into the best Spieth we’ve ever seen. 2 weeks ago, Spieth had what he called “his best putting performance in 2 years.” That’s debatable, but he could never had said that at any point in the last year. This is a very encouraging thing to see out of Spieth and I am buying when he’s cheap.
I doubt we can get Adam Scott at a discount or low ownership again, but I don’t know if I care. Last week, I told a friend, look he was using the cheater putter and now he’s not. Well last week, he had 2 putters in the bag all week. He stuck with the anchored putter all week and if that continues to be the case, Adam Scott is a great play. I don’t know how much I will play this week, but he is a favorite at the price.
Rafa Cabrera-Bello has been looking like he is back in peak form recently with 3 straight top 20’s. Rafa is a really talented golfer when he is at the peak of his game. I just think he is probably slightly underpriced for his talent level. He also does fit this course well with his iron game being one of his biggest strengths. I feel confident with him in both GPP and cash games.
Ryan Moore and Kevin Na are both guys in the lower tier that possess a high cut probability this week in my opinion. Both excel with their iron play and should be able to score enough to avoid the cut line. They also both have the ability to go and get the tournament outright if things swing their way. Both are good options in either format, but I would prefer Na in tournaments and Moore in cash games.
My favorite dart throw in the bottom of the bargain bin is Chez Reavie. Chez is a player that I have liked for a long time. His form had been putrid for a long time, but he played well in the second round of the RBC and then carried it over to an 11th place. Chez seemed to be back to old form 2 weeks ago, and I am willing to gamble that he continues this week. I want to get players that I think could be underpriced and this is a spot where I believe I am getting a talent, accuracy driven golfer at an accuracy course who just flashed better form. It’s a GPP play, but one I really do like a lot this week.
