Over the next four days, the biggest names in golf will be vying for victory at the second major of the year, the 2024 PGA Championship.
Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky has hosted the PGA Championship on three previous occasions, in 1996, 2000, and 2014.
On each occasion, things finished tight at the top.
In 1996, Mark Brooks defeated Kenny Perry in a playoff after both finished at 11-under. Four years later, Tiger Woods defeated Bob May in a playoff after both finished at 18-under. Then, ten years ago, Rory McIlroy (-16) edged Phil Mickelson by a stroke.
To date, that is McIlroy’s most recent major title. But after winning the Wells Fargo Championship last week at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, the four-time major winner is the second favorite this week behind Masters champion and world number one Scottie Scheffler.
Both golfers have been in the news for events in their personal lives. Scheffler and his wife welcomed their first child last week, while it was announced on Tuesday that McIlroy had filed for divorce from his wife Erica, whom he has been married to since 2017.
Will either of the world’s top two players lift the Wanamaker Trophy on Sunday? Will it be a crowning moment for the likes of Xander Schauffele or Ludvig Aberg? Or will defending PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka take his fourth title in the tournament?

2024 PGA Championship Predictions
Not So Bold Prediction: Scheffler, McIlroy, and Koepka will all finish in the top 10
Scheffler hasn’t played since winning the RBC Heritage last month but expect him to return with a splash. Starting with last year’s Byron Nelson, Scheffler has finished in the top ten 18 times in 21 official events, including nine of ten events this year.
Judging from McIlroy’s play last week at Quail Hollow, nothing in his personal life will adversely affect his performance this week.
As for Koepka, he has finished in the top ten in six of his 11 PGA Championship appearances, and after finishing tied for 17th, tied for 64th, and tied for 45th in his last three majors, he is due to return to the upper echelon of the leaderboard this week.
Bold Prediction: Phil Mickelson will finish in the top 20
Since shockingly winning the 2021 PGA Championship at Kiawah Island three years ago, Mickelson’s lone top-20 finish in a major is a tie for second at last year’s Masters.
But in three previous PGA Championship appearances at Valhalla, Mickelson tied for eighth in 1996, tied for ninth in 2000, and second behind McIlroy in 2014.
PGA Championship Winner Prediction: Xander Schauffele
Schauffele keeps knocking and knocking on the door, and he is going to break it down soon enough.
He wasn’t able to close the deal after holding the 54-hole lead at the Wells Fargo Championship, but he is having a very solid season, and it feels like only a matter of time before he picks up his first win since the 2022 Scottish Open.

Brooks Koepka to finish in the top 20 (-105)
Getting these odds for Koepka to finish in the top 20 when he has finished in the top 20 in 61.5% (24 of 39) of his major appearances, including 68.8% (22) of his last 32? You don’t have to tell me twice.
Jason Day to finish in the top 20 (+275)
When the PGA Championship was last held at Valhalla, Day finished tied for 15th.
This season has been a rollercoaster for him, but his best finishes have come in signature events. He tied for fourth last week, tied for sixth at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, finished alone in ninth at the Genesis Invitational, and tied for tenth at the Sentry to open the season.
Phil Mickelson to finish in the top 20 (+1200)
Lefty’s best days may be behind him, but he can still conjure up a little magic every now and then. With such long odds, a small investment could pay off handsomely if Mickelson does indeed perform well.
