2024 Farmers Insurance Open Betting: Can Finau Outlast a Strong Field at Torrey Pines?

Well, well, well. Another week, another unexpected winner on the PGA Tour. Will we see a fourth unexpected winner this week as the West Coast Swing continues at the Farmers Insurance Open?
Following wins by Chris Kirk (The Sentry) and Grayson Murray (the Sony Open in Hawaii), Nick Dunlap became the first amateur since 1991 (Phil Mickelson at the Northern Telecom Open – what became of that guy?) and just the third since 1956 to win a PGA Tour event by winning The American Express by a stroke over Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
Dunlap was scheduled to play this week at Torrey Pines, but he instead opted out of the event after bagging his big win.
But the Farmers Insurance Open field is full of notable contenders, including reigning tournament champion Max Homa and fellow U.S. Ryder Cup teammates Patrick Cantlay, Collin Morikawa, and Xander Schauffele, as well as European Ryder Cup team members Ludvig Aberg, Nicolai Hojgaard, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose, and Sepp Straka.
By the way, this week’s action on the links will get underway on Wednesday, with the tournament wrapping up on Saturday. That is due to the AFC Championship Game (Kansas City Chiefs vs Baltimore Ravens) and NFC Championship Game (Detroit Lions vs San Francisco 49ers), which will take place on Sunday.

Favorites to Win the 2024 Farmers Insurance Open
Xander Schauffele (+1000)
Schauffele was my pick to win The American Express, and he came fairly close, finishing two shots behind Dunlap. Were it not shooting only 3-under 69 on Friday, he might have broken his winless drought.
Collin Morikawa (+1100)
Morikawa, who finished tied for fifth at The Sentry in his only 2024 PGA Tour appearance to date, finished third in last year’s Farmers Insurance Open.
Max Homa (+1200)
The most recent of Homa’s six career PGA Tour wins came in last year’s Farmers Insurance Open, where he carded a final-round 6-under 66 to finish two strokes ahead of Keegan Bradley.
Patrick Cantlay (+1300)
This will be the first Farmers Insurance Open appearance for Cantlay, who finished tied for 52nd at The American Express. He entered Sunday in position for a high finish, but he shot a 4-over 76 to fall well down the final leaderboard.

Tournament Winner Prediction & Pick: Tony Finau (+2600)
Finau, who has at least one win in each of the last three years and has a history of high finishes at this tournament, would not be a surprise winner.
But in keeping with the start to the season, I’m rolling with a winner who is outside of the top favorites.
In his last seven Farmers Insurance Open appearances, Finau has finished in the top ten five times, including a tie for fourth in 2017 and a tie for second in 2021. Last year, he finished tied for ninth, with a final round 73 keeping him from a better result.
Tournament Finishing Position Picks
Eric Cole to finish in the top 20 (+165)
After finishing tied for 14th at The Sentry and tied for 13th at the Sony Open in Hawaii, Cole was on course to capture a third straight top 20 to start the season. But he bogeyed his final hole at The American Express, finishing tied for 21st as a result.
But I’m not abandoning him this week despite being denied a winning bet by his final-hole five.
Cole managed only a 72 this past Sunday, but that was just his third 70+ round in a dozen rounds this season. Of those nine other rounds, all nine have been 4-under or better.
Jason Day to finish in the top 20 (+130)
Day (2015 and 2018) is one of nine golfers to win the Farmers Insurance Open twice or more, and he has five other top-10 finishes in a dozen tournament appearances.
- 2010: missed cut
- 2013: tied for ninth
- 2014: tied for second
- 2015: won
- 2016: missed cut
- 2017: missed cut
- 2018: won
- 2019: tied for fifth
- 2020: tied for 16th
- 2021: missed cut
- 2022: tied for third
- 2023: tied for seventh
It was a tough call between picking him or Finau for the win, but I like Day to be in the mix even if he doesn’t join Mickelson (1993, 2000, 2001) and Tiger Woods (1999, 2003, 2005-08, 2013) as the only golfers to win the event three or more times.
Harris English to finish in the top 20 (+230)
English has opened his season with two solid results. He finished in a tie for 14th at The Sentry, and he came in tied for 10th at the Sony Open in Hawaii.
It must be noted that he has three missed cuts and a tie for 71st in four Farmers Insurance Open appearances since he finished tied for eighth in 2018, but I’m riding with current form in this spot.
Tony Finau to finish in the top 20 (+130)
In my previous picks, I haven’t made a finishing position pick for my chosen tournament winner. That was due to feeling it was a given, but I thought it better this week to explicitly state it.
In nine career appearances at the Farmers Insurance Open, Finau has finished in the top 20 seven times. His worst finish was a missed cut in 2022, while his only other finish outside the top 20 was a tie for 24th in his first appearance in 2015.
Sungjae Im to finish in the top 20 (+115)
After a double-bogey on the par-5 11th, Im failed to record a birdie in his last seven holes on Sunday and fell short of a top-20 finish at The American Express.
But as with Cole, I’m not abandoning him this week.
After finishing tied for 52nd, tied for 36th, and tied for 32nd in his first three Farmers Insurance Open appearance, Im has finished tied for sixth (2022) and tied for fourth (2023) in his last two appearances. Look for another positive week for the two-time PGA Tour winner.
