Through the first six events of the 2024 PGA Tour season, one of the game’s big names hasn’t landed in the winner’s circle. Will that change this week at the Genesis Invitational? We look at the tournament odds, break down the favorites, and make a few picks for the action at Riviera below.
Last week’s WM Phoenix Open seemingly drew as many headlines for the crowd’s unruly behavior as it did for what the golfers were doing on the course.
But when it came to the action on the course, Nick Taylor and Charley Hoffman finished Sunday tied atop the leaderboard at 21-under. After both birdied the first playoff hole, Taylor claimed his fourth career PGA Tour win with a birdie on the second playoff hole.
After a wild week in Arizona, the third $20 million signature event of the season is on the agenda this week.
Last year, Jon Rahm took the win in the 2023 Genesis Invitational, finishing two strokes ahead of 2021 champion Max Homa.
But just as 2022 Genesis Invitational champion Joaquin Niemann did not defend his title last year after making the move to LIV Golf, Rahm will not defend his title after joining that tour in December.
Rahm may not be in the mix, but the likes of Homa, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, and Viktor Hovland will be vying for the win at Riviera.
Read on to find out if any of the big names factor in our Genesis Invitational betting picks. First up, let’s take a look at the tournament odds.

Genesis Invitational Betting Analysis
Who Are the Favorites to Win the Tournament?
- Scottie Scheffler (+725): Scheffler has finished tied for fifth, tied for 17th, tied for sixth, and tied for third thus far this season, and it would seem to be only a matter of time before the world number picks up his first win since last year’s Players Championship.
- Rory McIlroy (+1200): McIlroy is back in action after finishing tied for 66th at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am two weeks ago in his first PGA Tour event of the season.
- Justin Thomas (+1600): After a subpar 2023, is Thomas back? It looks like it. He has finished tied for third, tied for sixth, and tied for 12th to start his 2024 campaign.
- Viktor Hovland (+1800): The 2023 FedEx Cup champion has finished tied for 22nd and tied for 58th in his first two events this season, but it won’t be long before we see him contending for his seventh PGA Tour win.
- Patrick Cantlay (+1800): Cantlay is still searching for his first win since the 2022 BMW Championship and his first top ten of 2024, though he finished tied for 12th at The Sentry and tied for 11th at Pebble Beach.

Is this the week one of the big names takes the win?
Scheffler has been knocking, knocking, knocking on the door, and eventually he’ll break it down.
Beyond Scheffler, Homa might be the real man to beat in the field. Including his 2021 win, Homa has finished inside the top ten in each of his last four Genesis Invitational appearances. He finished tied for 66th at Pebble Beach and missed the cut at the WM Phoenix Open, but a third straight poor performance is highly unlikely for Homa.
It’s a shame that Mathieu Pavon, who has had a fantastic start to PGA Tour life, is not in this week’s field. But in addition to opting out of the WM Phoenix Open, the Farmers Insurance Open winner and current FedEx Cup points leader opted out of the Genesis Invitational.
But two other golfers off to solid starts this year that are in the field are Thomas and Burns. Burns opened the season with a tie for 33rd at The Sentry, but he has since finished tied for sixth, tenth, and tied for third in his last three events.
There are a lot of worthy contenders in the field, but Scheffler, Homa, Thomas, and Burns are the four I am eyeing the most.
Best Betting Picks for the Genesis Invitational
- Collin Morikawa to finish in the top 10 (+165): Morikawa finished tied for sixth in last year’s Genesis Invitational and tied for second in 2022. If things fall the right way, he could be in the mix for his first official win since the 2021 British Open. But even if that doesn’t happen, he should have a strong week, and I like him to record his second top-10 finish in 2024.
- Max Homa to finish in the top 10 (+200): After a couple of unpleasant weeks, Homa should fare much better this week. In his last four Genesis Invitational appearances, he has finished tied for fifth, first, tied for tenth, and second.
- Sam Burns to finish in the top 20 (-115): Burns missed the cut here in 2022 and 2023, but I like how he is playing right now and expect him to have his best Genesis Invitational finish since he came in third in 2021.
- Will Zalatoris to finish in the top 20 (+190): After missing most of last season, Zalatoris is starting to get back into the swing of things and finished tied for 13th at the Farmers Insurance Open. He is good value to score a third top-20 finish at Riviera to go with last year’s fourth-place finish and a tie for 15th in 2021.
