Last year, Scottie Scheffler became only the sixth golfer to win The Players Championship by five or more strikes. This week, the world number one heads back to TPC Sawgrass for the 2024 edition of The Players Championship, fresh off a five-stroke win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Will he defend his title with another dominant performance?
2024 Players Championship Information
- Dates: Thursday, March 14 to Sunday, March 17
- Location: Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida
- Course: TPC Sawgrass (Stadium Course)
- Yardage: 7,245
- Par: 72
- 2023 Tournament Winner: Scottie Scheffler (-17, won by five strokes)
On Sunday, Scheffler captured his first win since last year’s triumph at Sawgrass by shooting a six-under 66 to separate himself from the field of contenders.
Entering the final round, he and Shane Lowry were tied for the lead at -9, with Wyndham Clark (-8), Russell Henley (-7), and Will Zalatoris (-7) all within striking distance. But while none of the other hopefuls were able to shoot better than 70, Scheffler drained six birdies during a bogey-free round to pull away.
Since his 2023 Players Championship win, Scheffler had ten top-five finishes and 14 top-ten finishes in 18 stroke-play tournaments. But a seventh career PGA Tour win had eluded him until he finally broke the drought at Bay Hill.
With the tour’s “fifth major” ahead this week and The Masters (April 11-14) a month away, Scheffler’s victory was certainly a timely one.
Will it be the start of a torrid run for the 2022 Masters winner? No one has back-to-back Players Championship victories, but Scheffler is a sizable favorite to become the first golfer to do so and the seventh to win the tournament multiple times.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the 2024 Players Championship?
Scottie Scheffler (+550)
Scheffler is the favorite for many of the tournaments he enters, so this is anything but a surprise. But he is the defending Players Championship winner and coming off of a big win at one of the tour’s signature events, which contributes to him being an even bigger favorite this week.
Rory McIlroy (+1400)
McIlroy won at TPC Sawgrass in 2019. Since that win, McIlroy has two missed cuts (2021 and 2023) and finished tied for 33rd in 2022. His best finish in five PGA Tour events in 2024 is tying for 21st at both the Cognizant Classic and Arnold Palmer Invitational.
Justin Thomas (+2000)
Thomas was the 2021 Players Championship winner. In his last two appearances at TPC Sawgrass, Thomas finished tied for 33rd in 2022 and tied for 60th last year.
The two-time PGA Championship winner is off to a solid start in 2024, other than a missed cut at The Genesis Invitational last month. In his other four events, Thomas has finished tied third (The American Express), tied for sixth (AT&T Pebble Pro-Am), and tied for 12th (WM Phoenix Open and Arnold Palmer Invitational).
Xander Schauffele (+2200)
Unlike Scheffler, McIlroy, and Thomas, Schauffele is not a previous champion. His best finish in the tournament was a tie for second in 2018, when he, Charl Schwartzel, and Jimmy Walker finished four strokes behind winner Webb Simpson.
Schauffele has two top-five finishes and four top-ten finishes in six events in 2024. He finished tied for third at The American Express and tied for fourth at The Genesis Invitational, and he finished tied for ninth at the Farmers Insurance Open and tied for tenth at The Sentry.

2024 Players Championship Predictions and Picks
Tournament Winner Prediction and Pick: Justin Thomas (+2000)
While Scheffler is certainly a worthy favorite, history points in a different direction. No one has repeated here, and it is rare to see someone win on the PGA Tour in consecutive weeks. Last season, Lucas Glover and Viktor Hovland were the only two golfers to win in consecutive weeks.
Thomas has played well thus far this season, and he is a former Players Championship winner. He didn’t have a great result at The Genesis Invitational, but I like where things appear to be headed for him after a disappointing season.
