2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic Best Bets
Rickie Fowler to Win Outright (+1400)
With the field missing a lot of key names this year, Rickie Fowler is the favorite to win the 2023 Rocket Mortgage Classic at +1400 odds. The veteran golfer is coming off a solid performance at the Travelers Championship that saw him finish T13 while shooting 13-under-par.
What makes Fowler a solid pick to win in Detroit is his consistency. He’s finished T17 or better in nine of his previous 10 events, which includes three finishes of T9 or better in three of his last four. Although he’s yet to win a tournament this year, Fowler’s runner-up status at the ZOZO CHAMPIONSHIP proved he’s more than capable of challenging for a title.
As for his experience at the Detroit Golf Club, the results have varied. On one hand, Fowler has finished 32nd or worse in three of four previous entries, which includes missing the cut last year. On the other hand, he also placed 12th in 2020.
Nevertheless, Fowler’s 2023 success outweighs his past struggles at the Detroit Golf Club. As long as he gets off to a strong start, he has a legitimate chance at emerging victorious this weekend.
Tony Finau to Finish Top 10 (+155)
Tony Finau wowed the Motor City in 2022 by capturing the Rocket Mortgage Classic. To understand how impressive his win was, the Salt Lake City, Utah native finished five strokes ahead of runners-up Patrick Cantlay, Taylor Pendrith, and Cameron Young — the second-biggest win margin in tournament history.
While Finau already proved that he’s capable of winning the event, I’m keeping expectations low this time around. For starters, the only other time he entered the RMC (2020) saw him finish 50th, leaving time to tell if last year’s win was a fluke or not.
Although Finau already has two victories 2023 PGA TOUR, he’s been struggling as of late. Here’s a look at his four most recent finishes:
- PGA Championship — T72
- Charles Schwab Challenge — Missed Cut
- U.S. Open — T32
- Travelers Championship — T45
Had his recent results been stronger, I’d consider backing Finau to win the whole thing. He still won last year, though, which is why I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt by backing a top-10 finish.
Cameron Davis to Finish Top 20 (+200)
Another bet worth considering this week is a Cameron Davis top-20 finish at +200 odds.
After all, Davis is one of the few returning champions in this year’s field. The gifted Australian pro captured the title in 2021, overcoming Troy Merritt and Joaquin Niemann in a three-way playoff.
Even though Davis failed to win the second of back-to-back titles last year, he still impressed by finishing 14th, shooting 68 or better in three of the four rounds.
The 28-year-old has also cracked the top 20 in four of his last 10 PGA events with the latest instance coming when he placed T4 at the PGA Championship. With a good chunk of the sport’s top talent missing this week, I like Davis’ odds at another top-20 finish in Detroit.
