To put it mildly, the last month and a half has been eventful for Rory McIlroy, at least publicly. But he will head into the 124th U.S. Open as one of the favorites to win the tournament, along with Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele.
At the end of April, McIlroy teamed up with Shane Lowry to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Two weeks later, shortly after celebrating his 35th birthday, he picked up his first individual win of the season, as he shot a final-round 65 to claim a five-stroke win at the Wells Fargo Championship.
Just two days later, it was announced that he had filed for divorce from Erica, his wife of seven years. That same week, he finished tied for 12th in the PGA Championship.
In the following weeks, McIlroy has put together two more solid finishes, a tie for fourth at the RBC Canadian Open and a tie for 15th at the Memorial Tournament last week.
As he prepped for this week’s action at Pinehurst #2, McIlroy announced on Tuesday that he had reconciled with his wife and that the divorce proceedings were off.
With the furor surrounding his personal life hopefully set to die down after dealing with some wild speculation and rumors in recent weeks, could this be the week that he finally ends his major title drought?

McIlroy is a four-time major winner and is a Masters win away from a career grand slam. But the last time he experienced the winning feeling in a major was the 2014 PGA Championship.
Since edging Phil Mickelson by a stroke to win at Valhalla, McIlroy has finished in the top five of a major ten times, including runner-up finishes at the 2018 British Open, 2022 Masters, and 2023 U.S. Open.
In that time, he has also won three FedEx Cup titles (2016, 2019, 2022) and has taken his total of career PGA Tour wins from nine to 24.
At only 35, McIlroy should still have numerous opportunities to contend for major titles. But based on his current form, the U.S. Open represents a great chance for him to become the 16th golfer to win five or more major titles.
McIlroy has the third best U.S. Open winner odds, trailing only Scheffler (+325) and Schauffele (+1200), the winners of the first two majors of 2024.
Are you confident that McIlroy will start well and challenge for victory at Pinehurst? There are a lot of betting markets available if so.
