It’s Ryder Cup time again, and the 2023 edition of the golf showdown between the best and brightest in the USA and Europe will get underway tomorrow at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club northeast of Rome.
On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, the likes of Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, and Brooks Koepka will battle it out for bragging rights. If you are in the USA, you can catch the action on USA, NBC, and Peacock.
Two years ago, the USA hammered Europe 19-9 at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin as the event returned to odd-numbered years as a result of the pandemic.
The USA has now won three of the last four editions held on this side of the Atlantic, but a win away from American soil has not happened since 1993.
That year, Raymond Floyd and the late Payne Stewart both went 3-1-0 to help the USA record a 15-13 win over Europe at The Belfry in England.
Will that run be ended this year? With three of this year’s major champions in their ranks, the USA has a very strong squad, which contains seven of the dozen names who were part of the victorious 2021 team, including 2023 PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka.
Europe will counter with a group that also contains seven of the 12 golfers who were a part of their 2021 team. That includes Rory McIlroy, 2023 Masters champion Jon Rahm, and 2023 Tour Championship and FedEx Cup playoffs winner Viktor Hovland.

2023 Ryder Cup Teams
Players in bold played in the 2021 Ryder Cup.
USA
- Sam Burns
- Patrick Cantlay
- Wyndham Clark
- Rickie Fowler
- Brooks Koepka
- Brian Harman
- Max Homa
- Collin Morikawa
- Xander Schauffele
- Scottie Scheffler
- Jordan Spieth
- Justin Thomas
The most interesting selection for the USA is two-time PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas. Thomas had a rough season on the PGA Tour and missed out on the FedEx Cup playoffs, but his outstanding Ryder Cup and Presidents Cup records made him a take over the likes of Cameron Young, Keegan Bradley, and Lucas Glover, who came barreling into the picture late with wins at the Wyndham Championship and FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Major winners Harman and Clark, meanwhile, are making their first appearances in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup.
Clark won the Wells Fargo Championship in addition to the U.S. Open this year, while Harman’s British Open win in July was his first tournament win since the 2017 Wells Fargo Championship.
Europe
- Ludvig Aberg
- Matt Fitzpatrick
- Tommy Fleetwood
- Tyrrell Hatton
- Nicolai Hojgaard
- Viktor Hovland
- Shane Lowry
- Robert MacIntyre
- Rory McIlroy
- Jon Rahm
- Justin Rose
- Sepp Straka
Two names stand out on Europe’s team. Aberg only turned pro in June of this year, but after winning the DP World Tour’s European Masters at the start of this month, the former Texas Tech star was named in the Ryder Cup squad.
MacIntyre is currently tenth in the world rankings, with McIlroy, Rahm, and Hovland the only Europeans ranked higher.
But unlike most of the other names on either side, the 27-year-old from Scotland doesn’t have a notable presence in the USA, as he calls the DP World Tour home.

2023 Ryder Cup Predictions and Picks
There has not been a tie in the Ryder Cup since 1989, when Europe retained the Cup after a 14-14 tie at The Belfry. So, it is highly, highly likely that there will be an outright winner.
But will the USA retain the cup, or will Europe continue its dominance on home soil?
All good things must come to an end, or bad things, if you’re on the American team. Captain Zach Johnson has been a part of five Ryder Cup teams and four Presidents Cup teams as a player, and he has picked a squad that has the quality and depth to break this European drought.
Thomas may have had a disappointing year on the PGA Tour, but he is a match play beast. Cantlay, Morikawa, Schauffele, and Scheffler all posted excellent records in the 2021 win, and Homa (4-0-0) and Spieth (5-0-0) were perfect in last year’s Presidents Cup triumph.
Europe has McIlroy, Rahm, and Hovland, and Rose has collected at least two points in each of the five World Cups (2008, 2012, 2014, 2016, 2018) that he has played in.
But what has been a very good year for American golfers will culminate in a long-awaited Ryder Cup win in Europe.
