The first event of the 2024 PGA Tour season is in the books, and after an exciting week at The Sentry, the tour will remain in the Aloha State this week for the Sony Open in Hawaii, which will take place at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.
There was a star-studded field at Kapalua, with the likes of Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, and 2023 British Open winner Brian Harman all vying to open the season with a win.
All four of those finished in the top ten, but none took the win and the $3.6 million top prize. Instead, it was Chris Kirk (-29) who held off Sahith Theegala (-28) and Spieth (-27) for his sixth career PGA Tour win.
Last season, Kirk earned $4,150,252 from 29 events. With his win at The Sentry, he has nearly matched that in one week.
Can he finish the Hawaii swing with another fine finish? The 38-year-old has finished runner-up at the Sony Open twice, in 2014 and 2021. And he will be one of the favorites in this week’s field, which isn’t as loaded as last week’s but has some notable names like Harman and 2023 Ryder Cup winners Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tyrrell Hatton, and Ludvig Aberg.

Sony Open in Hawaii Tournament Favorites
Ludvig Aberg (+1400)
Aberg had a disappointing week overall at The Sentry, finishing tied for 47th with a score of 13-under. But after shooting a 77 on Saturday, he finished strong with a 10-under 63 in the final round.
Matthew Fitzpatrick (+1800)
Fitzpatrick was in the entering the weekend last week, but where Kirk, Theegala, Spieth, and others went low on Saturday and Sunday, the Englishman went 69-68 and finished seven shots back of Kirk. Still, a tie for 14th isn’t a bad start to the season, and he should be in the running this week.
Russell Henley (+1800)
Henley won the Sony Open in 2013 and finished runner-up to Matsuyama in a playoff two years ago. He finished tied for 52nd at The Sentry, but this week should be a much better week for him.
Brian Harman (+2000)
Harman has only one top-ten finish at the Sony Open, a tie for fourth in the 2018 event.
But he had a good result at Kapalua, finishing tied for fifth with a 25-under 267. Were it not for an underwhelming 70 on Saturday, he would have been a contender for the win.
Chris Kirk (+2500)
In addition to his two runner-up finishes in the Sony Open, Kirk (-15) finished third last year behind winner Si Woo Kim (-18) and Hayden Buckley (-17).
Sahith Theegala (+2800)
Theegala might be kicking himself after managing to only par the par-5 18th on his 72nd and final hole at The Sentry, which ultimately resulted in him missing out on a playoff with Kirk. But a 63 on Sunday and a second-place finish are nothing to hang his head about, and he is definitely a name to watch at Waialae.

Tournament Winner Prediction and Pick: Chris Kirk (+2500)
Back-to-back winners are rare on the PGA Tour, but this is as good a spot as any for that to occur.
Kirk has had a lot of Sony Open success, and he is coming off of a fantastic week at Kapalua. Finally finishing at the top of the leaderboard at Waialae would give him multiple wins in a calendar year for the first time in his PGA Tour career, and confidence should be sky high for him after last week’s outstanding performance, in which he shot 67-65-66-65 to take the title.
Other Sony Open in Hawaii Picks
- Russell Henley to finish in the top 10 (+200)
- Brian Harman to finish in the top 20 (+115)
- Eric Cole to finish in the top 20 (+160)
- Sahith Theegala to finish in the top 20 (+200)
I think Harman (who is also +250 to finish in the top 10) and Theegala are great value here after their showings at The Sentry, and this week should be a nice bounce-back week for Henley (who is also +110 to finish in the top 20) after finishing near the bottom of the field last week.
With so many excellent options to choose from, it was hard to narrow things down and make only one more pick. But Cole had quite a nice run to wrap up last year, finishing tied for fourth or better in four of his last five events, and he opened 2024 by tying for 14th at The Sentry. Look for him to keep up the strong play at the Sony Open.
