The Match VII’s proceeds will be donated for victims of Hurricane Ian, so it’s nice to know that the quartet is playing for a good cause. Nevertheless, bragging rights are still on the line, so it’ll be interesting to see which golfing duo emerges as the victors when the dust settles.

The Match VII: Woods/McIlroy vs Thomas/Spieth Prediction

As you can tell from the above odds, The Match VII is shaping up to be a close-fought affair. Though Thomas and Spieth are the unanimous favorite across all highlighted sportsbooks, their shortest odds to win come in at -125 on three websites, carrying an implied probability of just 55.6%.

Still, you can’t blame Thomas and Spieth for being the favorites. The younger duo has had plenty of success recently on the PGA Tour and looks to keep the ball rolling in Belleair on Saturday.

When it comes to Thomas, the 29-year-old fared well in the 2021-22 season. Making 21 appearances, he placed inside of the top 25 on 13 different occasions, even cracking the top 10 in 47.6% of showings. Thomas also placed third three times with his best outing being when he won the PGA Championship in May.

Not to be outdone, Spieth also had a solid 2022 campaign. The Dallas, Texas native had his ups and downs, but he still made six top-10 appearances in 22 events played. Though he was the runner-up at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and AT&T Byron Nelson, he did come home with a first-place showing at the RBC Heritage.

However, it isn’t like Spieth and Thomas are facing a pair of slouches at The Match. It certainly goes without saying that Woods and McIlroy are two of the top golfers to have ever joined the PGA Tour and should be able to give the opposition a run for their money.

McIlroy had one of the best seasons of his career in 2022. The seasoned veteran placed first in the FedEx Cup standings, winning three separate events along the way: The CJ Cup, RBC Canadian Open and TOUR Championship. On top of that, he also was the runner-up at The Masters and even placed third at the Open Championship.

Unfortunately, the golfing world didn’t see too much from Woods over the last year. His near-fatal car crash in February 2021 left him sidelined until April, leading to his playing in just three tournaments. Considering how he was cut from one and withdrew from another, it’ll be interesting to see what shape he’s in.

Having said that, Woods is the only golfer this time around who’s played at The Match before. He lost against Phil Mickelson in 2018 before teaming up with Peyton Manning to defeat “Lefty” and Tom Brady two years later.

Even with Woods’ event experience and McIlroy doing most of the heavy lifting, I’m siding with Spieth and Thomas to win The Match. The latter duo has youth and better recent play on their side. Though McIlroy’s play should make it interesting at times, Woods is no longer at the top of his game and is too much of a question mark to trust from a betting perspective.
