A joyous June for golf continues this week, as the 124th U.S. Open will take place at famed Pinehurst #2 in North Carolina.
Entering the third major of 2024, Scottie Scheffler continues to be the man of the moment, the hour, and the year.
Scheffler had a rare over-par round on Sunday, but he survived to finish off a one-stroke victory at the Memorial Tournament. It was his fifth victory of the year, and all five have been in notable events: three signature events (Arnold Palmer Invitational, RBC Heritage, Memorial), one flagship event (The Players Championship), and one major (The Masters).
With the $4 million winner’s check he pocketed at Muirfield Village, Scheffler is now over $20 million in winnings for the season in only 13 events. With the U.S. Open this week and the Travelers Championship, another signature event, ahead next week, Scheffler could and should eclipse the record $21,014,342 he took home last year with two-plus months of the season—including the British Open and FedEx Cup Playoffs—still to come.
Scheffler is, as expected, the favorite to reign supreme this week. He is the world’s best golfer at present, and he will be the favorite in any tournament he enters until and unless that changes.
However, there is an impressive list of U.S. Open contenders that could deny Scheffler a second major title of the season. That includes PGA Championship winner Xander Schauffele, who has been the second-best player on the PGA Tour this season and finally had his long-awaited major moment last month.

Who Are the Favorites to Win the U.S. Open?
Scottie Scheffler (+335)
Following his Memorial win, here is how Scheffler has performed in his last eight tournaments:
- 1st
- 1st
- Tied for second
- 1st
- 1st
- Tied for eighth
- Tied for second
- 1st
Need I say more? I think not.
Xander Schauffele (+1100)
Scheffler is on the kind of extraordinary run that is rarely seen, but Schauffele has been anything but ordinary.
He faded on Sunday at Muirfield Village, shooting a three-over 75 to finish tied for eighth. But that was his tenth top-ten finish in 14 events this season, and he is already over $11 million in winnings this season.
Rory McIlroy (+1400)
McIlroy is not churning out high finishes like Scheffler and Schauffele, but he is in the midst of his best stretch of the season. He also had a rough Sunday at the Memorial, shooting a four-over 76 to wrap up the tournament at 2-over. But his tie for 15th was his fifth straight finish of 15th or better.
Collin Morikawa (+1600)
Among this group of U.S. Open favorites, Morikawa is the only one who hasn’t won this year. In fact, he doesn’t have an official PGA Tour win since the 2021 British Open.
But just as Schauffele was fervently knocking at victory’s door before knocking it down at Valhalla, Morikawa is doing the same currently.
With his runner-up finish this past weekend, he has finished tied for third, ninth, tied for 16th, tied for fourth, fourth, and second in his last six tournaments. Sundays have been a source of frustration for him several times this season, including at the PGA Championship. So, if he can put together a strong Sunday at Pinehurst, he might well break his drought this week.
