Del Mar runs the San Diego Handicap on Saturday. The Pacific Classic prep race will feature 2021 Kentucky Derby winner Mandaloun for Brad Cox.
Prepping for Summer’s Biggest Events
Travers Stakes
The Travers is the signature race on the east coast over the summer. The race is for 3 year old and is often referred to as “The Midsummer Derby.” This is because many of the horses who were still developing in May are no reaching a higher level. This means that the race is often a better indicator of future three year old champion than the Kentucky Derby.
Many horses will use a prep over the Saratoga surface to get ready for the race. That race is the Jim Dandy which will be run on Saturday, July 30, just like a similar event on the west coast.
TVG Pacific Classic
While the east coast has the Travers, the west coast has the TVG Pacific Classic as its big summer classic. Unlike the Travers this event is open to horses 3 year olds and up. This means that fans are treated to all of the best classic distance dirt horses in the country.
Much like the Jim Dandy to the Travers, the TVG Pacific Classic also has a key prep race that many horses utilize to get into their sharpest form. That race will also take place on Saturday, July 30. It is the San Diego Handicap.
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club- Race 1
Post: 2:00 PM PT; $46k Maiden Claiming going 5 1/2 furlongs on dirt; Entries: 8
- #3 CORTESE (3-1) gets the top selection. He makes sense on speed figures. This one has solid early pace figures in a race that looks to lack a ton of front running speed. These maiden races do sometimes have unpredictable speed duels as new shooters and rapid developers can often make pace analysis extremely tough.
- #7 TOP OF MY GAME (5-2) could be in with a shot in this race. He has faced the best thus far. This is another one that figures to be forward in the race.
- #1 CAPACITY (15-1) is a price horse and is probably best to put underneath on most tickets. He comes into the race with permission to improve in the third start.
- #4 TRUSTY RUSTY (4-1) debuts here and is probably best to take a wait and see approach in the win end. He goes out for the O'Neill barn and gets Cedillo in the irons. They’re a solid combination, but the price suggests the jury is still out on this one.
Selections: 3 – 7 – 1 – 4
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club- Race 2

- #1 QUICK BUCK (5-2) is the top pick. He goes out for the Glatt barn and gets Cedillo in the irons. This one seems to fit really well here.
- #9 MOBOU (8-1) should be competitive in this spot. He comes into the race in really good form. This one will likely be in the first flight of runners and should be in with a chance late.
- #8 CONTINENTAL DIVIDE (3-1) could be a player in this spot. He has races good enough to beat this group. This one has proven to be able to handle these conditions in previous starts.
- #5 NOLONGERAHOBBY (5-1) feels like a fringe contender in this spot. His class stacks up well enough with this group.
Selections: 1 – 9 – 8 – 5
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club- Race 3

- #9 QUARANTELLA (3-1) should improve off the first start and looks best here. She is well bred for this spot. This one goes out for the Blacker barn and gets Bravo in the irons.
- #4 GREEN EYED LADY (3-1) should have the right to improve with a start under the belt and appears to be a major player in this race. She has the pedigree to be a major contender in the race.
- #6 DANCING MO (30-1) is a price horse and should be competitive in this spot. She has races good enough to beat this group. This one may benefit from a hot pace up front.
- #5 COMANCHE COUNTRY (5-2) isn't without hope. She has to be respected going out for the combination of D'Amato and Rispoli. Rispoli is among the top turf jockeys in the colony.
Selections: 9 – 4 – 6 – 5

- #7 ELENIAK (3-1) should be competitive in this spot. He will likely be out on or near the lead and will look to hold off the charge to the wire. This one has really consistent pace figures which should work well if the pace isn’t too hot.
- #8 CHIPPER (6-1) should be competitive in this spot. He has races good enough to beat this group.
- #2 BLAME GEORGE (3-1) should be competitive in this spot. He makes sense on speed figures. This one runs evenly and looks to get a very fair pace scenario here.
Selections: 3 – 7 – 8 – 2
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club- Race 5
Post: 4:07 PM PT; $46k Maiden Claiming going 1 1/16 miles on turf; Entries: 14
- #13 PERCOLATE (4-1) is the top pick. He shouldn't have trouble with the 1 1/16th mile distance. The price is fair enough
- #10 NAISMITH (3-1) appears to be a major player in this race. Based on the previous competition this one wouldn’t be a surprise at all to hit the winner’s circle.
- #2 FLYING FRED (8-1) feels like a fringe contender in this spot. He makes sense on speed figures. This one projects to sit mid pack and come with one run.
- #7 LAW ABIDING (4-1) isn't without hope. He should be sitting in the second tier of runners and looking to make one well timed run at the leaders.
Selections: 13- 10- 2 – 7

Selections: 7 – 11- 6 – 12
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club- Race 7
Post: 5:07 PM PT; $84k Allowance Optional Claiming going 5 furlongs on turf; Entries: 9
- #1 CHASIN MUNNY (5-1) gets the top selection. He has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here. This one may benefit from a hot pace up front.
- #6 COMMANDER (4-1) appears to be a major player in this race. He makes sense on speed figures. He projects to sit mid pack and come with one run.
- #5 COULTHARD (12-1) is a price horse and appears to be a major factor here. He classes up really well against this field at 12-1. He’s worth the risk at the price.
- #4 LANE WAY (7-2) should be competitive in this spot. He should be sitting in the second tier of runners and looking to make one well timed run at the leaders. This one could get the right setup if the leaders keep the tempo a bit slower than expected.
Selections: 1 – 6 – 5 – 4
Del Mar Thoroughbred Club- Race 8
Post: 5:37 PM PT; $400k Bing Crosby S. going 6 furlongs on dirt; Entries: 10
- #2 SHAAZ (7-2) is the top pick. He has tactical speed and can sit just off the leaders for a stalk and pounce trip. This one looks to be the class of the field.
- #6 HOWBEIT (20-1) is a price horse and appears to be a major player in this race. He will be in the right spot throughout the race. The question will be if he can sustain it home. Nevertheless, at 20-1 you’re getting the better of it.
- #5 PRINCIPE CARLO (6-1) should be competitive in this spot. He comes into the race in really good form. This one could be a dangerous threat to get loose on the front end if everyone else sits back.

- #10 MIDNIGHT JOSTAR (7-2) looks best here. He will likely have a lot to do in the lane, but could get up with a competitive run. There does appear to be a reasonable amount of pace here.
- #1 LIBERAL (5-1) should be competitive in this spot. He will be rolling late and has a good closing kick that could get the job done here. This one may benefit from a hot pace up front.
- #5 COALINGA ROAD (10-1) is a price horse and should be competitive in this spot. He has proven to be able to handle these conditions in previous starts. This one seems to class up well enough.

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club- Race 10
Post: 6:37 PM PT; $300k San Diego H. going 1 1/16 miles on dirt; Entries: 9
- #3 MANDALOUN (4-1) gets the top selection. He projects to sit mid pack and come with one run. This one has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here. It looks pretty clear that he was empty off of the Saudi race in February, but will now come back for the second time in a month. That suggest the Foster was a prep for this spot.
- #7 TRIPOLI (6-1) appears to be a major player in this race. He shouldn't have trouble with the 1 1/16th mile distance. This one is a really sneaky horse in these races who always seems to be a middling price and runs some big efforts.
- #9 ROYAL SHIP (4-1) looks like a factor here. He has the class to run against these types. This one may benefit from a hot pace up front.
- #4 STILLETO BOY (6-1) rounds out the top 4. He goes out for the Moger barn and gets Hernandez in the irons. This one has races in the past performances that could win this race.
Selections: 3 – 7 – 9 – 4

- #14 VELVET (5-2) is the top pick. She will be rolling late and has a good closing kick that could get the job done here.
- #6 VIVANDO (4-1) makes some sense here. She shouldn't have trouble with the 1 mile distance. This one has speed figures that could put her in the winner’s circle.
- #4 LEISUREWEAR (7-2) isn't without hope. This one comes into the race in really good form and has run a number that puts her in the mix.
- #7 TAKEMEBYTHEHAND (8-1) seems to be running for the minor placings in this contest. This race feels like the turning point where she gets involved or spends her career trying to break her maiden.
Selections: 14- 6 – 4 – 7
