The Breeders’ Cup world championships is just days away. Many handicappers have been focusing on the horses for months. Shrewd bettors will also pay attention to how to turn those handicapping opinions into efficient and profitable tickets.
Breeders’ Cup Wager Types
The 14-race world championships of horse racing will feature a variety of different wagers for players. Because the Breeders’ Cup rotates from year to year, it does not follow track specific wagers and minimums. Below is a list of wagers offered at Del Mar in 2021.

The minimum for all single horse bets at the 2021 Breeders’ Cup is $1.

Breeders’ Cup Special Horizontals
With so much money in the pools the Breeders’ Cup can offer extra opportunities to wager without diluting the pools. The following wagers are exclusively offered as part of the Breeders’ Cup wager menu.
Minimums are the same as the traditional wager of the same type. For example, a Breeders’ Cup special Daily Double would have a $1 minimum.
- Additional Pick 4 and Pick 5 wagers in the middle part of the card on Saturday.
- Breeder’s Cup All Turf Pick 4 on races 5, 7, 9, and 11 on Saturday.
- Juvenile Turf/Turf Double on race 10 Friday with race 11 Saturday.

Friday Breeders’ Cup Wager Menu
What to Watch for on Future Stars Friday
Young horses are highly unpredictable. The Friday Breeders’ Cup races are all juvenile races meaning that the horses are two years old. They are a long way off from the animals they will be when they reach peak racing age between four and five years old (it is unlikely we will see many of these at that age as they will be shipped off to breeding careers).
Despite the ability for horses to make huge jumps forward late in their two-year-old season, Future Stars Friday has tended to be pretty formful overall. 60 percent of the juvenile races have a median payout under $10 for a $2 win.
Seeing Green
If you’re hoping to cash a big ticket on Friday, historically your best bet has been on the green. The Juvenile Fillies Turf is the only two-year-old race with a median win payout over $20.
When it comes to the exotics, the turf races further establish their value. The Juvenile Fillies Turf has the highest median payouts for exacta, trifecta, and superfecta. The only other race with a median payout to eclipse the $1,000 mark in the superfecta is the Juvenile Turf.
Saturday Breeders’ Cup Wager Menu
What to Watch for on Breeders’ Cup Championship Saturday
The biggest and most anticipated events of the two-day event are on Championship Saturday where the best horses will be competing for some of the top prizes in the sport. The races will feature not only the best American horses, but those from dozens of countries represented.
One of the challenges for players is determining how the three-year-olds will stack up against the older horses in their division. Many of these younger horses will be facing olders for the first time which can be a real test to their ability.
When looking at historical mutuel payouts, Saturday has been where the real value is. Over time these races have shown more propensity to return middle price horses in the 5-1 to 10-1 range. This can lead to higher win returns.
3 Year Old Classic Winners
While stepping up in class can be a challenge for the three year olds, they have done pretty well in the Classic. 4 of the last 7 classic winners were three year olds. This could be due to the fact that many of the top three-year-olds will be retired after this race to begin stud careers.
Essential Quality, Medina Spirit, and Hot Rod Charlie are all three years old heading into the race.
Turf Euros Reign
The European horses have had a strong upper hand in the longer turf divisions of the Breeders’ Cup. For example, of the 13 winners of the Longines Turf only 2 were American. Last year’s champion Tarnawa looks to have a strong hand in this year’s edition as well.
Watch and Wager on the Breeders’ Cup
The Breeder’s Cup action will kick off Friday from Del Mar at 11:55 am Pacific Time. To wager on the proceedings, sign up for one of the many online wagering platforms available in states where horse betting is legal. Some of the top players are DRFbets, TVG, NYRA Bets, 1st Bet, and Twinspires.
