Canterbury Park continues to trail blaze with player-friendly bets. Wednesday’s three stakes card will feature 2 industry low 10% takeout bets.
Low Takeout
In 2021 we chronicled the success of Canterbury Park’s reduced takeout pick 5. In Canterbury Park Industry-Low Takeouts Return in 2021 we highlighted that lowering the takeout, or what sports bettors call “the juice”, actually created more revenue for the track.
In 2022 the Shakopee, Minnesota track has upped the ante. Along with offering an industry low 10% takeout on the late pick 5, they also offer a 10% early pick 4. The low takeout means that the track keeps less and more money is paid back out to the winners.
Vote with your Wagering Dollar
Players interested in seeing the proliferation of lower vigorish would be wise to invest in these bets as often as they can afford.
Horse racing is a copycat game and if other tracks see Canterbury Park increasing revenue, they are more likely to implement the same changes across the country at your favorite race strip.
Weather in the Area
A heavy rain system is moved into the state of Minnesota on Tuesday night. The rain seems likely to persist all day and into the evening on Wednesday. This could be bad news for Canterbury Park’s Wednesday card.
Although there is little question the races will be run, the major concern is that all three of the stakes races are scheduled to be run on turf. While tracks can run in the rain on turf, American tracks are quick to pull races off it there is too much rain.
Occasionally major turf stakes will be run over soft or yielding turf, but that is the exception not the rule. In the case of Wednesday’s stakes races it seems likely they will be contested on the dirt as the track will have little interesting in destroying their turf course with a majority of their season ahead of them.
All races below carded for turf were handicapped twice. The first pass was assuming they are run on turf. The 2nd analysis reevaluates the races using the horse’s dirt form.
