Gulfstream Park Friday: Championship Meet Producing Longshots

The early phase of the championship meet at Gulfstream Park has been marked by a large number of upsets. Players would be wise to look beyond the top of the market. This becomes especially important when playing bets like the trifecta which is frequently paying over $1,000 for a $1 investment.

Gulfstream Park- Race 1

Post: 12:10 PM ET; $35k Maiden Claiming going 1 1/16 miles on turf; Entries: 9

• #2 ARTICO (5-2) gets the top selection. He shouldn't have trouble with the 1 1/16 mile distance. This one has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here.
• #5 SWAN LAKE (9-2) should be competitive in this spot. He seems to fit well enough here. This one has the pedigree to be a major player in this spot.
• #9 COMMANDER FLYNN (7-2) feels like a fringe contender in this spot. He has races good enough to beat this group. This one will likely have a lot to do in the lane, but could get up with a competitive run.
• #4 COALMINER'S KITTEN (5-1) is probably best to put underneath on most tickets, but seems likely to be in the mix.

• #4 STRASBOURG (8-5) is the top pick. He shouldn't have trouble with the 6 1/2 furlong distance. This one could be a dangerous threat to get loose on the front end.
• #6 GILLIGAN (2-1) appears to be a major player in this race. He has races good enough to beat this group.
• #7 FISHING FOR FUN (4-1) is a good bet to hit the board in this type of race.
• #2 CHIQUIRIN (15-1) is a price horse and has been productive hitting the board at these conditions before.

• #8 TRUCE OF GOD (8-5) looks best here. He has races good enough to beat this group. This one has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here.
• #7 MOUSEFAST (7-2) debuts here and isn't without hope. He goes out for the D'Angelo barn and gets Saez in the irons.
• #1 CATATUMBO LIGHTNIN (4-1) makes the first career start and seems well fancied on the morning line.
• #2 GO GREEN (9-2) is another debut runner that could be in with a shot here.

• #5 FRENCH FRANC (7-2) gets the top selection. She may benefit from a hot pace up front. This one should be sitting in the second tier of runners and looking to make one well timed run at the leaders.
• #8 STRONG EMBRACE (3-1) could be in with a shot in this race. She makes sense on speed figures. This one will likely have a lot to do in the lane, but could get up with a competitive run.
• #10 LUNA ANTONIA (9-2) feels like a fringe contender in this spot. She makes sense on speed figures. This one has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here.
• #2 TAKE THE PODIUM (8-1) is probably best to put underneath on most tickets. She makes sense on speed figures. This one has to be respected going out for the combination of Pinchin and Ortiz.

• #2 OLD TIME REVIVAL (7-2) appears to be a major player in this race. He has races good enough to beat this group. This one has run against some solid competition.
• #5 VINNIE VAN GO (5-1) should be competitive in this spot. He has the top overall power rating in the group. This one has proven to be able to handle these conditions in previous starts.
• #3 EXAMINER (3-1) isn't without hope. He seems to fit well enough here. This one could get the right setup in this race.

• #4 DREAM OF CHANGE (5-2) appears to be a major player in this race. She shouldn't have trouble with the 1 mile distance. This one has to be respected going out for the combination of Gutierrez and Zayas.
• #9 MANDY GREEN (5-1) is probably best to put underneath on most tickets. She makes sense on speed figures.
• #8 AMUNET (15-1) is a price horse and has races good enough to beat this group. This one will be rolling late and has a good closing kick that could get the job done here.

• #4 FAVOR (8-5) gets the top selection. She has been really solid in recent starts and should be ready to run a big one here.
• #7 BLUEFIELD (3-1) appears to be a major player in this race. She has proven to be able to handle these conditions in previous starts. This one could be a dangerous threat to get loose on the front end.
• #1 SONAR (20-1) could outrun the odds. She has tactical speed and can sit just off the leaders for a stalk and pounce trip. This one has races good enough to beat this group.
• #3 STARSHIP NALA (5-1) isn't without hope. She looks to be the class of the field. This one has solid early pace figures in a race that looks to lack a ton of front running speed.
