Let’s dive in to the exciting return of the XFL!
What is the XFL?
To start out, let’s get a little background on what the XFL is and how it will operate this season.
The XFL was started in 2001 by WWE Majority Owner and Executive Chairman Vince McMahon and is an American Football league filling the gap left by the NFL in the spring.
The 2001 season was the only XFL season before it’s electric return in 2020, which was then cut short by the COVID-19 Global Pandemic.
After the 2 failed attempts to get the XFL off the ground, this year, under its new owners Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson, Dany Garcia and Gerry Cardinale, the XFL is set for a fresh start and an exciting new season.
This year, the XFL will feature:

- 40 regular season games
- 2 Playoff Games

There are 8 teams in the XFL, representing 2 conferences and are comprised of Big name former College and NFL players and coaches.
XFL North
- D.C. Defenders (Reggie Barlow)
- Seattle Sea Dragons (Jim Haslett)
- St. Louis Battlehawks (Anthony Becht)
- Vegas Vipers (Rod Woodson)
XFL South
- Houston Roughnecks (Wade Phillips)
- Orlando Guardians (Terrell Buckley)
- San Antonio Brahmas (Hines Ward)
- Arlington Renegades (Bob Stoops)
Where to Watch

How is the XFL different from the NFL?
Most of the standard rules you know and love from watching the NFL are in place, with a few exceptions, via ESPN.
“In the XFL, you can elect to go for one point (a play run from the 2-yard line), two points (from the 5) or three points (from the 10) after each touchdown. This will make the standard key betting numbers of 3 and 7 likely irrelevant and open up a whole new angle to betting.”
Another key difference in the XFL compared to the NFL is the Overtime Rules.
“In addition, overtime will consist of each team getting five one-play possessions to attempt to score from the 5-yard line and will continue until a team is mathematically eliminated. This means that if a game has a point spread of 6 or less, it will always be in play in the OT.”
There are a few rule alterations and interesting features that the XFL is trying out and will be interesting to see play out live as well.
Coaches Challenges
First off, the XFL is allowing offering coaches the chance to challenge, one time per game, any possible play, including judgment penalties like pass interference and holding.
Given the amount of controversial flags and penalties in the NFL in recent seasons, none bigger than the Defensive Holding penalty in Super Bowl 57, it will be very interesting to see this rule plays out and how it affects the game.
Fumble through the End Zone
Another welcome change is that fumbles that occur inside the field of play and exit the end zone will not result in a turnover and a touchback, giving the defending team possession of the ball from its own 20-yard line.
Unlike the NFL, the team that fumbled the ball will retain possession from the spot of the fumble.
Kickoff Returns
Kickoffs will also get a fresh new look.
Only the kicker and returner on kickoff plays will be allowed to move, until the ball is caught or after the ball has been on the ground for at least three seconds.
This will be similar to the way the kickoff was in the 2020 XFL season. At the start of the kickoff, both teams will be lined up 5 yards apart.
This will ensure player safety is still at the forefront yet encourage teams to not just settle for a touchback.
Onside Kicks
Lastly, teams will have the option to go for one down to convert a fourth-and-15 play to retain possession and keep the offense on the field, instead of opting for an onside kick.
All of these amendments will be very interesting to see how they play out and I am sure if they are well received and work well, we could see them adopted by the NFL.
How to Bet on the XFL?
From a betting perspective, the XFL has made it very clear that they want to work hand-in-hand with Vegas and the sportsbooks to have the betting aspect of the game be at the forefront of the viewing experience.
“We’re going to grow sports betting with the XFL as Vegas grows,” ESPN coordinating producer Bryan Jaroch said Wednesday in a conference call with reporters. “Our understanding is that Vegas needs to see a few weeks of football before they expand to prop bets and live lines and other things. … As Vegas expands, we will expand as well. We will be very aggressive in talking about sports betting during the games.”
Live betting odds will be constantly updated throughout all the games and discussed in the broadcast to encourage viewers to learn about how to bet on the game and the best bets to take.
