Will Gallen Pick Up a Rare Road Win in Detroit?
With Spencer Strider struggling mightily in his most recent start against the New York Mets this past Thursday, today offers an opportunity for Gallen to bolster his NL Cy Young Award case.
However, he has only one win in his last four starts, and the road is where he has been at his worst this season.
At home, Gallen is 6-0 with a 0.96 ERA in seven starts. But on the road, he is 1-2 with a 5.40 ERA in six starts. At home, Gallen has allowed just six runs (five earned) in 47 innings and has allowed three runs just once, but he has allowed 23 runs (19 earned) in 31.2 innings on the road and has allowed three or more runs four times.
That isn’t particularly encouraging, but what is encouraging is that he should be saved by some decent run support even if he doesn’t have his best stuff at Comerica Park.
In winning 19 of their last 26 games, the Diamondbacks have scored five or more runs 17 times. Nine of those 17 times have been in their last dozen games, a period in which Arizona is 10-2 and has opened a 2.5-game lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.
The Diamondbacks also hit a higher clip against LHP (.270) and in games started by LHP (.267) than they do against RHP (.262) and in games started by RHP (.263). You have to like their chances of a productive day against Wentz, who hasn’t made it through five innings in any of his last five starts.
Last time out, Wentz allowed five runs, seven hits (two homers), and five walks in just 4.2 innings in a road loss against the Philadelphia Phillies this past Monday.
