The Astros marched into T-Mobile Park last night and secured a 5-1 win over the Mariners. Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker each recorded home runs for Houston while SP Justin Verlander allowed one run with eight strikeouts over eight innings of work for the victory.

Astros vs Mariners Game Preview
Tonight’s Astros vs. Mariners showdown is filled with playoff implications.
Both clubs are in the thick of the American League playoff race as the Astros occupy the No. 3 wild-card spot while the Mariners sit 1.5 games behind them. Houston is also 2.5 games back of the Texas Rangers for the AL West lead while Seattle is four games away from taking the division’s top spot.
Unfortunately, the Mariners’ recent play has left their fans concerned regarding their team’s postseason outlook. After all, Seattle is in the midst of a four-game losing streak at T-Mobile Park, getting outscored 23-7 on aggregate along the way.
Furthermore, the Mariners don’t tend to perform well when their AL West rival comes to town, highlighted by the Astros picking up victories in seven of their last nine trips to Seattle.
The Mariners will also have a tough time winning if George Kirby can’t get his act together. While the 25-year-old righty has been solid for the majority of the season, he’s just 1-2 with a 5.56 ERA in his last six starts.
On the flip side, time will tell which version of Cristian Javier will be on the mound for the Astros.
The veteran righty hasn’t been his most consistent self lately, going 1-2 with a 5.61 ERA in his seven previous starts. At the same time, he’s coming off a strong showing that saw him allow only one run with 11 strikeouts over five innings last Wednesday.
Furthermore, Javier is 3-1 with a 2.45 ERA in nine career meetings (five starts) against the Mariners, which includes just four earned runs allowed over 7 2/3 innings pitched at T-Mobile Park.

Even though the Mariners are 8-3 against the visitors this season, I’m taking the Astros to win. Seattle’s home play has been awful lately and the club seems to crumble more often than not when Houston comes to town.
Assuming that Javier builds off his latest showing, the Astros are in a good spot to cement their wild-card status tonight.
