Astros vs Reds Predictions & MLB Picks Today (9/2)
The Reds continue their homestand as they look to end their bad luck on Monday. Although Cincinnati is coming off Sunday’s 4-3 extra-innings win over the Milwaukee Brewers, David Bell’s club is still just 5-12 SU across the last 17 games, which includes an abysmal 2-8 SU record in the last 10 games at the Great American Ball Park.
The Astros, meanwhile, are one of the Majors’ hottest teams.
After all, the Astros boast an impressive 18-7 SU record since Aug. 6 while their 72.0% win percentage ranked second-best during that stretch. They’ve also won each of their last five games, outscoring those opponents by an average of 4.4 runs per game.
Several Houston players stepped up during this successful run, including Yordan Alvarez. The superstar slugger is slashing .392/.484/.810 with 10 home runs, 18 RBIs, and 12 walks in his last 79 at-bats.
LF Yordan Alvarez has been the Astros’ best player throughout the last month.
The Reds have won six straight games against the Astros, which includes last season’s three-game sweep. Nevertheless, a lot can change in a year. It’s also worth noting that Cincinnati only owns a 42.1% success rate in 2024 inter-league matchups whereas Houston sits at 51.4% in that regard.
Astros veteran RHP Justin Verlander is looking to put an end to a three-game losing streak that’s seen him pitch to a 6.00 ERA across 15 innings. Having said that, Verlander most recently beat the Reds just last season as he struck out seven batters in as many innings during a 2-1 win for the New York Mets on May 10.
Meanwhile, Reds rookie RHP Julian Aguiar is only making his fourth start of the campaign. The 23-year-old hurler is on rebound watch after surrendering six runs and three homers on 10 hits in just four innings when he faced the Oakland A’s on Thursday.
Will Astros RHP Justin Verlander end his losing streak today?
Don’t overthink this matchup — the Astros should beat the Reds while covering the run line along the way. Houston is proving to be quite the World Series contender whereas Cincinnati is showing zero signs of improvement. The Astros are also outscoring their opponents by more than four runs during their latest heater and should be able to take advantage of Aguiar’s inconsistencies.
As long as the Astros’ batters show up this afternoon, I’m confident that the visitors can win in a big way.

Best Astros vs Reds MLB Player Prop (9/2)
I’m going with Yordan Alvarez to record o1.5 total bases (-139) for the best Astros vs. Reds player prop today.

Alvarez has been on a tear lately, batting .393 with a .491 on-base percentage in his last 24 games. The three-time MLB All-Star slugger amassed 69 total bases during that stretch (2.9 per game), finishing with the Over on this prop on 14 of those occasions — including when he tallied eight against the Kansas City Royals less than 24 hours ago.
Considering how Alvarez is slashing .322/.412/.597 with 204 TBs in 93 games against right-handed starters this season, I feel good about him finishing with the Over again.
Best Astros vs. Reds Prop Bet: Yordan Alvarez o1.5 Total Bases (-139)
