Will Sizzling Snell Overpower Orioles for Series Clincher?

Yesterday, the Padres put together a rare complete performance at the plate and on the mound in a 10-3 win over the Orioles.

At the plate, they tallied 13 hits, nine of which were extra-base hits. The biggest of the bunch was a first-inning grand slam by Gary Sanchez, which gave the Friars a 5-0 lead and set them on their way for a much-needed win.

On the mound, Michael Wacha pitched five scoreless innings and allowed just three hits and one walk to improve to 9-2 for the season.

Not being able to more consistently produce such performances is why the Padres are 5.5 games behind the Miami Marlins (63-58) for the last NL wild-card spot.

But today’s rubber game brings the opportunity to do so, with their best pitcher taking the hill.

In his two starts this month, Snell has given up as many runs as he did in the 12 previous starts entering August.

But he is still 8-2 with a 1.16 ERA in his last 15 starts, allowing just 11 earned runs in 85 innings. Over the course of those 15 starts, he has allowed more than one run only three times and has had seven scoreless outings.

The Orioles have MLB’s second-best win percentage in games following a loss this season (29-16, .644) and are 25-19 (.568) as a road underdog, so this isn’t a bad spot for them to be in at all.

Kremer isn’t a Cy Young candidate like Snell, but he has allowed two or fewer runs in five of his last seven starts, all of which Baltimore has won. Also, he has allowed two or fewer runs in six of his last seven road starts, a stretch in which the Orioles are 6-1.
