See Picks & Statistics For The GameJuly is winding down, and the Boston Red Sox have good reason for being a bit sad to see it end.
With a 15-5 record this month, the Red Sox have moved out of the cellar in the AL East and set themselves up for a real run up the MLB wild-card standings.
Last night, they won their fifth straight game, taking the opener of their interleague series in San Francisco. Today, they will look to take their win streak to six and secure a series win over the Giants (7:15 pm ET, FOX).

Can Struggling San Francisco Right the Ship?
While the Red Sox are motoring in the right direction as August approaches, the Giants are riding in reverse, with seven losses in nine games.
The timing couldn’t be worse, either. The rival Los Angeles Dodgers have dropped four of their last five games, but the Giants have squandered the opening to really close the gap in the NL West. Both teams lost at home last night, which keeps San Francisco three games back, with Arizona, who also lost at home last night, a further game back.
Current NL West Standings
- Los Angeles Dodgers 58-44
- San Francisco Giants 56-48
- Arizona Diamondbacks 55-49
- San Diego Padres 50-54
- Colorado Rockies 40-63
If your hope is that the Giants will see off the Red Sox today to pick up a much-needed win, the outlook is not an overly optimistic one.
Other than an outburst of sorts against Oakland in an 8-3 win on Wednesday, the Giants have been pitiful at the plate as of late.
In the nine games since outslugging the Reds in an 11-10 win in Cincinnati eleven days ago, Wednesday’s game against the A’s is the only time in the Giants have managed more than three runs.
Barely being able to cobble together two or three runs significantly squeezes the margin of error that pitchers have, and when DeSclafani has been displaying some glaring generosity, it’s easy to see why the Red Sox are favored here.
Monthly Splits for Anthony DeSclafani
- April (five starts): 2-1, 2.70 ERA
- May (six starts): 2-3, 4.10 ERA
- June (five starts): 0-3, 6.65 ERA
- July (three appearances – two starts): 0-1, 10.61 ERA
In his first six starts this season, DeSclafani was 3-1 with a 2.13 ERA and allowed two or fewer runs four times.
Since then, he is 1-7 with a 6.57 ERA and has allowed two or fewer runs only three times in 13 appearances (12 starts). This month, he has allowed 11 runs and 15 hits–six of which have been home runs–in only 9.1 innings, including four runs and eight hits in 4.1 innings in his most recent outing against the Washington Nationals six days ago.
Paxton had a rough start two weeks ago against the Chicago Cubs, allowing six runs in three innings. But he has largely been solid since making his season debut May 12. In his dozen starts, he has allowed two or fewer runs eight times. For someone who made only six starts from 2020-22, that represents a stellar ROI for the Red Sox.

Red Sox vs Giants Pick: Red Sox ML (-121 at Bovada)
Today could be the day that things start to turn around for both DeSclafani and the Giants, but it does not look likely.
The Red Sox don’t have strong percentages of success as a favorite on the road (8-8, 50%) or overall (26-21, 55.3%) this season. In contrast, the Giants have been excellent as an underdog at home (12-4, 75%) and overall (28-18, 60.9%).
But Boston is definitely the pick here, and a sixth consecutive win will see them continue a joyous July.
