With the Brewers leading the NL Central and the Phillies sitting atop the NL East, MLB enthusiasts can expect to see another competitive tilt this evening.

Even though they took the loss last night, the Brewers shouldn’t be underestimated. Milwaukee owns an impressive 9-3 SU regard across its 12 previous outings and was even on a five-game winning streak before coming up short yesterday. That’s without mentioning how the club is also 21-13 SU (61.8%) in NL matchups this season.

Having said that,  let’s not forget that the Phillies lead the National League with a 42-19 record. Although things looked rocky at the end of May, Philadelphia has turned things around by winning four of its last five games while holding its opponents to two or fewer runs in each victory.

And not only are the Phillies 33-17 SU (66.0%) against the NL in 2024, but that includes a 25-9 SU (73.5%) record at home.

Other NL clubs have struggled against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park this season. 

Yesterday’s loss was a rare one for the Brewers, who have won four of their last six games against the Phillies. Conversely, Philadelphia’s victory wasn’t that shocking given that they’re 9-1 SU across their last 10 outings at home.

The Phillies will look to left-handed pitcher Cristopher Sanchez to continue the momentum. The 27-year-old hurler has pitched to a 2.83 ERA through 11 starts this season and leads the NL with 0.1 home runs per nine innings. He also has a 2.45 ERA in 7 1/3 career innings against Milwaukee.

Meanwhile, today’s contest is another bullpen game for the Brewers — their second in as many nights. As great as the Phillies are, they’ve struggled against bullpens throughout the 2024 season, so don’t be surprised if their bats aren’t as electric as usual.

Will the Phillies’ batters find a way to solve the Brewers’ bullpen?

Although the Brewers have more than enough talent to win, I’m taking the Phillies tonight. The Phillies rarely lose at home and have been racking up wins in Philly over the last few weeks. Even if the struggles against bullpens are there, Philadelphia is good enough to squeak out a win to take the 2-0 series lead.

Nevertheless, the Under on the 9-run total is the best bet. For starters, the Under is 4-1 in Milwaukee’s last five road games and 5-1 in Philadelphia’s six previous overall. The last seven Brewers-Phillies matchups also featured an average of 7.6 runs, finishing with fewer than nine five times.

With the Under being 5-0 in the last five games between these clubs at Citizens Bank Park combined with the Phillies struggles against relievers, I expect a quiet night from all bats involved.
