An NL Central rivalry reignites when the Cardinals and Cubs collide at Wrigley Field this afternoon. It’s just the second series of the 2024 campaign between these foes after St. Louis notched back-to-back wins over Chicago at Busch Stadium last month.

The Cardinals have been up and down throughout the season, but they do have five wins in their last eight outings. Four of the victories did come against losing teams, though, so it remains to be seen if the recent success is because St. Louis is actually good or if it has to do with its bad opponents.

Nevertheless, the Cards have the opportunity to catch the Cubs in a slump. Chicago has struggled to produce results, going 2-5 SU in the last seven games while being held to an average of 3.0 runs during that stretch. In fact, the club hasn’t scored five or more runs since a 7-6 win over the White Sox on June 5.

Regarding facing fellow NL Central teams, neither side has found much success in 2024. The Cardinals are only 7-8 SU against their division rivals, however, the Cubs are much worse, having played to an 8-15 SU record.

The Cardinals have struggled to beat NL Central teams this season. Fortunately for them, the Cubs have, too. 

Although the Cardinals already beat the Cubs twice this season, history hasn’t always been that kind. After all, St. Louis is still only 3-6 SU in its last nine games against Chicago. Furthermore, Oliver Marmol’s club has also dropped four of its last five trips to Wrigley Field.

St. Louis will look to Kyle Gibson to help with a third straight win over Chicago. While the Cardinals righty has been solid with a 4-2 record and 3.76 ERA in four starts this season, Gibson is 0-4 with a 6.64 ERA in four career starts against the Cubs.
