Cardinals vs Reds MLB Predictions, Picks, & Props Today (8/13)
The Reds took an early advantage in this NL Central series with a 6-1 blowout win over the Cardinals on Monday. Cincinnati’s offensive explosion was led by second baseman Spencer Steer, who hit home runs in back-to-back at-bats while driving in five runs along the way. Andrew Abbott also struck out six batters across 6 2/3 innings for his 10th victory of the season.
The Cardinals’ latest loss only added to the bad vibes that have been growing since the MLB All-Star Break. Not only 4-7 SU in their last 11 games, but the Cardinals have also now dropped six of their last eight road outings, inching them closer to falling below the .500 mark.
Are the Reds perfect? No, but they’re at least 5-3 SU in their last eight games and now head into tonight’s matchup aiming for a third consecutive win. If successful, it’ll be the third time that Cincinnati will achieve a three-game winning streak since the beginning of July.
The Cardinals haven’t had much road luck this season. Will that change tonight?
The Cardinals are putting their chances of victory in Erick Fedde’s hands tonight. The 31-year-old right-hander has played to mixed results since arriving from the Chicago White Sox, allowing six earned runs across 10 innings in two starts — good for an abysmal 5.40 ERA.
On the other hand, Fedde did strike out six batters with one run allowed in a 5-2 win over the Tampa Bay Rays last Wednesday, leaving time to tell if it’s a sign of better things to come.
As for the Reds, they’re hoping that RHP Hunter Greene has another strong start looming. The former 2017 second-overall selection has gone 3-1 with a 1.03 ERA in his last seven starts, which includes allowing zero runs on four occasions. He also amassed 51 strikeouts in just 43 2/3 innings during that stretch while limiting opposing batters to a .136/.244/.163 slash line.
Furthermore, Greene impressively owns a 2.67 ERA while averaging 13.7 strikeouts per nine innings in his last five meetings with the Cardinals.
Reds RHP Hunter Greene has been electric lately.
After yesterday’s victory, I’m taking the Reds to win again today. The Cardinals have been putrid on the road and they’re even tougher to trust tonight due to Fedde’s unpredictability. Greene gives the Reds a great chance to win anytime he takes the mound, making it the better bet to side with the home team.
Additionally, it’s best to take the Over on the 8.5-run total. Ten of Fedde’s last 12 starts featured nine or more runs while Greene’s last two starts featured 10-plus. The Over is also 6-1 in the Cardinals’ last seven games as the underdog, as well as 7-3 in the Reds’ last 10 games overall.
I also recommend taking Hunter Greene u2.5 earned runs (-122) for the best Cardinals vs. Reds player prop. He’s finished with the Under in 16 of his first 23 starts (69.6%) thus far with six of those instances occurring in his last seven appearances alone. Considering how he has also allowed just one earned run in his last 19 innings at the Great American Ball Park, you can see why I have confidence in Greene tonight.
