The Diamondbacks begin an eight-game road trip following Wednesday’s 12-5 victory over the Colorado Rockies. Meanwhile, the Cubs continue their homestand after their three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants.

Diamondbacks vs Cubs Game Preview
The NL wild-card race is heating up while the Diamondbacks and Cubs are in the thick of it.
The Cubs enter tonight’s contest as the No. 2 wild-card club, however, they’re also just 1.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the NL Central lead. Meanwhile, the Diamondbacks sit 0.5 games back of the final wild-card position with the Giants and Cincinnati Reds breathing their neck.
If they’re going to move closer to taking over a playoff spot, the Diamondbacks need to be better on the road. They’ve lost four of their last six away games, including the last three by an average margin of six runs.
On the flip side, the Cubs are on a five-game winning streak at Wrigley Field, boasting a plus-3.2 average run margin. Seiya Suzuki has done most of the dame down that run, tallying two home runs with nine RBIs while slashing .421/.450/.895 across 19 at-bats.
The D-backs are also hoping to get better play out of starting pitcher Ryne Nelson.
The 25-year-old righty has been awful lately, going 0-2 with a 9.16 ERA in his last four starts after allowing 19 earned runs and six HRs on 28 hits over 18 2/3 innings. Even worse is that Nelson has allowed six ERs over three innings in each of his last two appearances.
Meanwhile, after beginning the 2023 MLB season as a reliever, Javier Assad has turned into a reliable starter for the Cubs. He’s made six starts since the beginning of August, going 2-0 with a 1.95 ERA while allowing 6.8 hits with 6.6 strikeouts per nine innings.
For comparison, Assad is 1-2 with a 3.06 ERA as a reliever this season.
If he continues pitching as he has over the last month or so, it’s going to be tough for the Diamondbacks to get much offense going.

With the Diamondbacks struggling to keep things close on the road, I’m taking the Cubs to win. Chicago has been playing great at Wrigley Field while Assad’s continued dominance on the mound should produce more results — especially with the Arizona batters only having two runs on 12 hits with 16 Ks in their last two away games.
As for a player prop, I’m going with Seiya Suzuki to record over 1.5 total basses (+145).
Suzuki has been Chicago’s best player lately, racking up 27 total bases with a 1.415 OPS in his last seven games. He’s finished with the over on this prop six times during that stretch and with how poorly Nelson has been pitching, I see that streak continuing.
