Diamondbacks vs Dodgers Game Preview
Although the Dodgers and Diamondbacks are two of the NL West’s top three teams, the gap between them couldn’t be bigger. After all, Los Angeles heads into tonight’s action 14 games ahead of Arizona for the division lead.
While a win for the Dodgers won’t shift the standings, the Diamondbacks can’t afford to lose. They’re just 0.5 games out of the NL’s final wild-card spot with Cincinnati Reds and Miami Marlins sitting less than three games behind them.
The Diamondbacks have been hot lately, winning seven of their last 10 games, but they’re in for a tough test tonight. The Dodgers have been rock-solid at home, going 14-1 with a plus-3.4 average scoring margin.
Matters get worse when you take into account that the D-Backs have also lost 16 of their 20 previous trips to Dodger Stadium, which includes a 2-4 record there this year.
Another interesting trend worth noting is that the Diamondbacks are just 12-13 against the NL West on the road in 2023, whereas the Dodgers are 13-5 at home against divisional foes.
Arizona is turning to rookie starting pitcher Brandon Pfaadt, who’s coming off a win over the Cincinnati Reds that saw him allow just two runs with five strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.
At the same time, Pfaadt is winless on the road this year, going 0-2 with a 4.20 ERA in five previous away starts.
Meanwhile, the Dodgers’ Ryan Pepiot is set to make his first start in over a year. The 26-year-old, who began the season on the IL with an oblique injury, has pitched well since his return, playing to a 2.00 ERA while striking out 11 batters over nine innings.
Assuming that Pepiot can handle the load, it looks like the Dodgers have the pitching edge heading into tonight’s game.

This game is the Dodgers’ to lose after how easily they’ve dominated the Diamondbacks — especially at home. With Arizona also being 3-6 in Pfaadt’s last nine starts, I don’t see Los Angeles having any issues creating separation as the night goes on.
Keeping that in mind, I like the Dodgers covering the 1.5-run spread. While the Diamondbacks are 14-11 ATS on the road against NL West teams this year, Dave Roberts’ club is 12-6 ATS at home against the division. After winning the last two games by an average of 5.5 runs, LA won’t struggle to cover.
As for a Diamondbacks vs Dodgers player prop, let’s go with Mookie Betts finishing with over 1.5 total bases (-110). He’s batting .524 with five home runs, 16 hits, and 54 TBs over his last 16 outings, finishing with the over on this prop in all but two of those games.
With how much Pfaddt has struggled as a rookie, Betts won’t have trouble racking up the bases tonight.
