The Diamondbacks return to the road after falling 5-3 to the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Giants are back at Oracle Park after defeating the Miami Marlins in a three-game series, most recently winning 3-1 yesterday.
When it comes to winning the divisional crown, both clubs are long shots. Arizona is tied for the second-best odds to win the NL West (+900) while San Francisco sits fourth at +1400, per BetOnline.

Diamondbacks vs Giants Predictions & MLB Picks Today (4/18)
Tonight’s showdown marks the first Diamondbacks-Giants clash of the 2024 MLB season. The 2023 series between these NL West rivals was relatively even as Arizona won seven of its 13 clashes against San Francisco. Having said that, it was the Giants who went 5-2 SU across seven tilts at Oracle Park.
Nevertheless, both clubs could use a win as they enter this evening’s bout with losing records. While the Diamondbacks are a solid 7-6 SU at home to begin the year, they’re only 2-4 SU on the road, having been outscored 32-28 on aggregate in those games.
The Giants haven’t been that special at home, splitting their first six outings at Oracle Park. The main reason why Bob Melvin’s club has a losing record is that it can’t string together multiple wins. San Francisco has only won consecutive outings once this season and boasts a 6-7 SU record in the last 13 games.
The Giants are struggling to win games during the 2024 season consistently.
But even if the Diamondbacks aren’t meeting expectations after playing in the 2023 World Series, they still have one thing going for them: their offense. Arizona averages 5.58 runs (5th) and 8.68 hits (9th) per game whereas San Francisco averages 4.16 (19th) and 8.21 (T-15th), respectively.
The D-backs also have a slight edge when it comes to pitching. Although it’s far from the best mark in the league, the Diamondbacks’ 4.06 team ERA (16th) is still noticeably better than that of the Giants (4.75, 25th).
If Arizona wants to win tonight, Ryne Nelse needs to keep up his solid play. The 26-year-old righty looked good against the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday, striking out seven batters with only one run on seven hits across six innings in a 4-2 victory.
Meanwhile, Logan Webb has been terrific for the Giants through his first four starts. The 2023 NL Cy Young finalist has picked up from where he left off, pitching to a 3.80 ERA with 17 strikeouts and five walks allowed in 23 2/3 innings.

In a game that could go either way, I’m taking the Diamondbacks to win. Neither team has looked special this season, but Arizona has been better than San Francisco on both sides of the ball. Considering how the Giants are struggling to win consecutive outings, the D-backs are the safer pick.
I will stick with a neutral bet, though, and back the Under on the 8-run total. For starters, the Under is 4-1 in Arizona’s last five games and 5-1 at Oracle Park this season. Speaking of which, 11 of the Giants’ last 12 home games dating back to last season fell short of their projected totals.
The Under is also 5-2 in the last seven games between these NL West rivals with each of the last four played at Oracle Park finishing with fewer than eight runs.
With Nelson and Webb coming off solid performances, don’t expect a lot of offense tonight.

Nelson hasn’t been perfect this season, but he’s finished with the Under on this prop twice through his first three starts. He’s also averaged 5.0 hits allowed in three previous meetings with the Giants, finishing with the Under in the last two encounters.
With the Under also being 5-0 in his last five road games combined with the Giants’ offensive struggles, I’d be surprised if Nelson doesn’t pull through again.
