Dodgers vs. Padres (September 27): Anderson, Dodgers look to play spoiler in San Diego

With the best record in the National League locked up and the best record in the majors almost locked up, the Los Angeles Dodgers aren’t under much pressure this week.

But over the next few days, they can certainly increase the pressure on the rival San Diego Padres, who are battling it out with the Philadelphia Phillies and Milwaukee Brewers for the two remaining NL wild-card spots.

The Padres and Phillies are out in front, but the Brewers, like the Padres, finish up with nine games at home. So, they certainly can’t be counted out at this point.

With the worst home record of the three teams and games ahead against at least Tyler Anderson, Julio Urias, Dylan Cease, and Carlos Rodon, nothing is set in stone for San Diego at this point.

It would certainly be an immense disappointment for them to miss out on the postseason with their talent and after they landed Juan Soto this summer, but they have to keep their recent form going and seal the deal.

The Padres hit better against LHP (.247) than RHP (.238) and in games started by LHP (.252 in 52 games) than RHP (.235), but they haven’t had a ton of success against Anderson this season.

Will that change tonight? It’s not likely.

Since giving up more than three runs in three of his five June starts, Anderson has given up more than three runs just once in 14 starts.

And since that start, when he allowed five runs in five innings against the San Francisco Giants in a win on August 2, he has a 1.72 ERA and seven quality starts in his last eight starts.

However, Anderson has three losses in those eight starts, so if Snell can bring it, the Padres will be in it. But will he?

The former AL Cy Young winner has pitched very well for the last few months, allowing fewer than two runs in 11 of his last 15 starts.

But in one of his rare poor starts, he allowed five runs, seven hits, and three walks in four innings at home against the Dodgers, so that is a factor to consider if you are thinking of backing Snell and the Padres tonight.

As much as San Diego needs this game far more than the Dodgers do, it’s not a compelling enough reason for me to get behind the home team here when they are 4-12 against the World Series favorites this season.

You’re not going to get the Dodgers at these kinds of numbers often either, this year, next year, or probably the year after that, so this is a rare opportunity to take advantage of.
