Giants vs. Athletics (August 7): Will Webb stop short skid to pick up his 10th win?

The first game of the San Francisco Giants vs. Oakland Athletics weekend matchup had the expected result, with Carlos Rodon and the Giants taking a 7-3 win over the Athletics.

Last night, NL Cy Young Award candidate Carlos Rodon allowed just one run and five hits in 5.1 innings, and San Francisco hit three homers and tallied 11 hits in a 7-3 win over the A’s.

In today’s matchup, Logan Webb will look to reach double figures in wins for the second straight season, while Adrian Martinez will be aiming for his third win in five starts this season.

All Signs Don’t Point to the Over, But Most Do

After last night’s game went over, the over is in focus for today’s matchup thanks to numerous favorable trends.

For starters, neither pitcher’s most recent outings have been excellent. Webb has allowed 10 runs and 15 hits in 11.1 innings in his last two starts. This is the first time since September 2020 that he has allowed four or more earned runs in consecutive starts, so it is out of the norm for the 25-year-old righty.

Martinez is making his first MLB start since July 11, and he’ll no doubt be hoping that the result is better than his previous three starts.

He pitched 5.1 shutout innings in his MLB debut on May 10 at Detroit, but he has allowed 16 runs, 19 hits, five homers, and six walks in the three starts since. And of his four starts, his debut is the only one in which there have not been at least eight combined runs.

Of Webb’s 22 starts this season, there have been eight or more combined runs in 15 of them, including six of his ten road starts.

And while the Giants have scored just six runs in his last three starts, run support has not been an issue when things have gone well. San Francisco has won 12 of his starts, and in those 12 starts, they have scored five or more runs ten times.

Given the opposition today, that last bit should be encouraging for both Giants bettors and over bettors.

There is the temptation to back the run line here as well, but I don’t love it enough to throw anything behind it in this spot given that it’s in the -140 range at the time of writing.

But the Giants are a good bet today, and their bats should give Webb plenty of support.

Martinez isn’t exactly lighting the world on fire at any of his stops, though any Triple-A numbers must be taken with a grain of salt. That said, it’s hard to see him having a better time out there than Adam Oller, who allowed four runs, eight hits, and three walks in last night’s loss for the A’s.
