Guardians vs. White Sox (September 21): Is it last chance saloon time for Chicago’s AL Central chances?

In last night’s game against the Cleveland Guardians, the Chicago White Sox did what they have time and again this season and lost a game that they could or should have won.

But their ninth extra-inning loss and 38th home loss of the season has all but put them on the brink of being all out of hope of repeating as AL Central champions.

A win last night would have pulled them within three games with the chance of really tightening things up, but with a sweep out of the equation now, there is only so much they can do over the final two games of the series.

With 14 games left, Chicago is now five games behind Cleveland in the division, and even winning these next two games will still leave them needing the Guardians to have a collapse over the final two weeks of the season.

But they still can’t be written off just yet, and a win tonight will keep the candle of hope flickering for another day.

Lynn beat the Guardians in Cleveland just six days ago, as he allowed two runs, six hits, and one walk and struck out six in 6.1 innings in Chicago’s 8-2 win.

It was the veteran righty’s fourth win in four starts, and it was the seventh straight start in which he allowed two or fewer runs. In that stretch, he is 5-0 with a 1.43 ERA and has allowed 11 runs (seven earned) in 44 innings.

McKenzie has a 2.41 ERA in his last eight starts, and Cleveland is 3-0 in his first three starts this month.

But I like Lynn and the White Sox to pick up the win tonight to keep things somewhat interesting in the AL Central for even just another day or two.

I also like Lynn to go over 5.5 strikeouts once again, just as I backed him to do last Thursday.

The 35-year-old has tallied at least six Ks in 11 of his 18 starts this season, including 10 of the last 12. At home, he has six Ks in six of eight starts in 2022, including each of the last five. Also, he has hit that target three times in four starts against Cleveland this year.
