Angels vs. Royals (July 25): Greinke looks for latest winning performance at home

After opening the second half of the MLB season with an impressive series win over the Tampa Bay Rays, the Kansas City Royals now welcome the Los Angeles Angels to Kauffman Stadium for a three-game series to begin a new week.

Neither of these teams is a factor in the American League playoff race, other than playing spoiler.

But it is Kansas City who enters the series with more to feel confident about, as they have now won their last three home series. The Angels, meanwhile, picked up just their third win in July yesterday when they salvaged the series finale against the high-flying Atlanta Braves.

Syndergaard’s Road Struggles Likely to Continue in K.C.

The Angels are just one of three AL teams (and eight teams MLB-wide) with fewer than 20 road wins this season. So, it is no surprise that Syndergaard’s numbers on the road do not compare to his numbers at home.

At home, he is 4-2 with a 2.96 ERA in eight starts. But on the road, he is 1-5 with a 5.96 ERA in six starts. He won his first road start of the season at Texas on April 16, but he is 0-5 with a 6.86 ERA in the five starts since.

This isn’t to say that he has been bad every time out, because he hasn’t been. In fact, he gave up only two runs and five hits and struck out eight (with no walks) in his most recent road start, a loss to the Marlins three weeks ago.

But he is getting an embarrassingly low amount of run support, so allowing even two runs is too much. Since getting seven runs of support in his first road start, he has gotten six runs of support in five starts.

By contrast, Greinke has been at his best at home. The veteran righty is 3-1 with a 1.86 ERA in seven home starts, while he is 0-5 with a 7.38 ERA in eight road starts.

Greinke has not allowed more than two runs in any of his home starts, while he has allowed more than two runs in six of his eight road starts. And while the Royals are 5-2 in his home starts, they are just 2-6 in his road starts.

Backing the under 4 for the Angels’ team total might offer more security–you can find the under 4 at BetOnline, Bovada Sportsbook & MyBookie–but I don’t see them putting up more than three runs tonight, so I am very comfortable to roll with the under 3.5 in this situation.
