Los Angeles Angels vs New York Yankees Preview (June 30): Super Shohei Seeks to Spark Angels in the Bronx

The Angels are far from the best team in the Majors this season, but any game where Shohei Ohtani is on the mound is must-see TV. Put that game in Yankee Stadium, and it is hard not to make it the Game of the Day. You can certainly expect for plenty of MLB betting action to take place on this matchup as well.
Unfortunately, the Angels are still playing without their other mega-star, three-time AL MVP Mike Trout. But as brilliant as Trout is, he does not pitch. And that has been the Angels’ weakness this season and for much of Trout’s career. The most recent evidence of that is the 11 runs they gave up in last night’s loss to the Yankees.
I suppose that scoring outburst from New York was well-timed after GM Brian Cashman acknowledged what everyone already knew – that the Yankees just aren’t very good right now. Getting better is going to be a challenge too as it is going to mostly rely on internal improvement.
The Yankees have a difficult stretch of games coming up too. After they are done with the Angels all of their game leading up to the All-Star Break are against teams that are currently over .500.

Can Yankees Build from Here?
Yesterday the Yankees used three homers to spark their highest-scoring game of the season. It was just the second time all year they have scored 10 or more runs. For a team that was supposed to be loaded on offense this season, that is an astounding statistic.
One of the homers was hit by catcher Gary Sanchez. Usually, he takes a lot of criticism but with a .236 average, they actually have him hitting third in the order. New York’s lineup has the capacity to be very productive. Maybe all they needed was a kick in the backside from management.
While they need the lineup to improve, the bullpen is tops in the league as measured by WAR. Teams have shown that you can win a lot with a strong lineup and a good relief corps. The starters have just been okay this season, with the exception being Gerrit Cole, who is the MLB betting favorite for the AL Cy Young. However, Cole was hit hard in his last start.
Angels Need Ohtani to be Outstanding on the Mound Tonight
After taking Game 1 of the series the Angels fell hard last night. I thought Andrew Heaney might have some value over Yankees starter Jameson Taillon, who has had some struggles this season. But as has been the case too often this season, the starting pitching of the Angels has not given them a chance. The starters are posting an ERA of 5.10, and as explosive as the offense can be, it is difficult to play catchup every night.
Shohei Ohtani is the outlier. He has hit five homers in his last five games in the lineup to take the MLB lead from Vlad Guerrero Jr., but tonight the Angels need him to pitch well. In 11 starts this season, he has only given up more than three earned runs once. He dominates on the mound, striking out more than 12 batters per nine innings. If the Yankees are truly on the upswing, this game will be a fun challenge.
Shohei Ohtani Home vs. Road
- Home: 2-0, 1.73 ERA, 36.1 IP, 50 Ks, 22 BBs
- Road: 1-1, 3.91 ERA, 23 IP, 32 Ks, 9 BBs
Domingo German Home vs. Road
- Home: 0-2, 4.67 ERA, 34.2 IP, 33 Ks, 9 BBs
- Road: 4-3, 3.99 ERA, 38.2 IP, 33 Ks, 7 BBs
There is no doubt which arm has greater potential tonight. Ohtani is elite but is also like a comet streaking through the sky. Only once all season has he pitched more than six innings. The road splits do not help but at the same time, German has shown a preference for pitching away from Yankee Stadium.
Angels vs. Yankees Best Bet: Angels ML The Yankees are one of the few opponents where there won’t be an absolute flood of MLB betting money on Ohtani. That is something to take advantage of, though you should note that it is no guarantee.
The Angels have been MLB betting underdogs with Ohtani on the hill three times this season and lost all three games. Still, I think it is worth a bet. He has pitched more than well enough in each game, allowing only 5 ER over 19 innings against San Francisco, Houston, and Oakland. All three of those teams are among MLB’s top teams. It looks like the MLB betting public is on the underdog and the pros are on the favorite tonight.
