Thursday, July 6’s MLB schedule reignites an AL West rivalry as the Seattle Mariners and Houston Astros begin a four-game series at Minute Maid Park. Seattle won two of its three meetings with Houston back in May, leaving time to tell how the next Mariners vs Astros series will begin.
The Mariners hope to get back on track after Wednesday’s 2-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants snapped their winning streak at four games. Meanwhile, the Astros look to extend their winning ways to five consecutive outings after notching a 6-4 win over the Colorado Rockies less than 24 hours ago.
Do the Mariners have what it takes to win tonight and get back to the .500 mark? Or will the Astros stay red-hot as they close in on the AL West lead?
Here’s a look at everything you know heading into this evening’s Mariners vs Astros clash, from the latest betting odds to a prediction with the best betting recommendation, courtesy of Betting News.

Mariners vs Astros Game Preview
The Mariners have found a fair amount of success recently, now sitting five games back of the American League’s final wild card spot. Having said that, a good chunk of their recent success has come at home.
Now, the Mariners must take to the road to face a strong Astros team at Minute Maid Stadium. Unfortunately for them, Scott Servais’s club has experienced its fair share of road troubles, dropping 12 of its last 18 away games. Seattle has been unable to win more than two games in a row over that span.
And while the Mariners overcame the Astros during their May series, there’s a chance that victory was a fluke. After all, Seattle has lost 10 of its last 13 games against Houston with a minus-1.7 average run margin in those contests.
Minute Maid Park has also been a tough environment for the visiting team. The Astros are 9-3 in their last 12 home games against the Mariners and have outscored them 34-19 on aggregate in the last five Mariners vs Astros matchups in Houston.
The Mariners are going with George Kirby as their starting pitcher in this divisional clash. The 25-year-old righty has been consistent throughout the 2023 campaign, going 7-7 with a 3.21 ERA while pacing the MLB with 9.56 strikeouts per nine innings over 16 starts.
Kirby also tends to play well against the Astros. In two previous meetings with Houston, the form Elon University product played to a 1.64 ERA while striking out 12 batters over 11 innings. It’s a small sample size, but it does show that Kirby gives the Mariners a strong chance to win if he can keep that trend going.
Unfortunately, the Mariners don’t know who they’ll be facing when it’s the Astros’ turn to take the mound. Houston has yet to name a starter for this clash at the time of writing, meaning it could be anyone from a bullpen arm to a minor-league call-up.
Regardless of who the starting pitcher is, the Astros are a scary team. Not only have they won seven of their last eight outings, but they’ve gone 16-7 overall against the AL West this season, whereas the Mariners are 4-5 on the road when it comes to divisional matchups.
On top of that, the Mariners only have a 37.0% success rate as the underdog in 2023. On the flip side, the Astros own a 56.1% win percentage as the favorite.
Mariners vs Astros Prediction and Picks
Mariners vs Astros Prediction: Astros 4, Mariners 3
Mariners vs Astros Best Bet: Astros ML (Best Value: -152 )
I’m riding the hot hand in this matchup by siding with the Astros to pick up the victory. The Mariners just haven’t played well on the road while their struggles against Houston are well-documented. Even with the Astros’ pitching situation being unknown at the moment, they’ve been producing positive results regardless of who’s been on the mound.
Unfortunately, the betting options are slim until the Astros name their starting pitcher, meaning a Houston outright moneyline bet is the top pick for now.
