Mariners vs Reds Game Preview
With the first week of September nearly being done, a victory tonight is crucial for both team’s postseason chances.
The Mariners currently occupy the AL’s second wild-card spot, however, they’re only one game away from falling out of the playoff race. Meanwhile, the Reds are the NL’s No. 3 wild-card seed with three teams sitting two or fewer games behind them.
Although Cincinnati has won the first two games of the series, it’s important to remember that Seattle has also won 15 of the last 20 meetings between these clubs. That includes winning eight of 11 matchups at the Great American Ball Park.
Winning won’t be easy, but the Mariners have a great shot at victory any time Logan Gilbert starts on the mound.
Gilbert is in the midst of his second straight double-digit win season, having gone 12-5 with a 3.56 ERA through 27 starts.
What’s even more impressive is that the 26-year-old right hasn’t lost a start since June 28. Since then he’s made 11 starts, pitching to a 6-0 record and a 2.73 ERA while striking out 69 batters with nine walks issued over 69 1/3 innings.
Unfortunately for the Reds, their pitching situation isn’t nearly as promising tonight. Rookie right-handed hurler Lyon Richardson is set to make his fourth career start.
The former 2018 second-rounder has struggled since making his MLB debut in early August. He’s currently 0-1 with a 6.75 ERA through three starts, having yet to make it to the end of the fifth inning.
Although his play has improved with each passing game, it’s going to take a lot for Richardson to out-duel Gilbert. It also doesn’t help that the Reds’ offense has been solid lately, scoring six-plus runs in each of the last three games.

After the Reds won the first two games, it’s now time for the Mariners to win. Gilbert gives them a pitching edge, as does the fact that they’ve won eight of their last 11 games in Cincinnati.
Having said that, I’m taking the Reds at +1.5 on the spread. I see this being a close game after how the first two encounters with. Besides, there’s always a chance that Cincinnati will pull off the upset and complete the sweep.
It’s also worthwhile to take the under on the 9.5-run total. Again, all but five of the last 20 Mariners vs Reds clashes finished with the under, averaging 8.5 total runs over that stretch. Despite combining for 13 runs last night, expect less offense tonight.
