Behind yet another solid performance on the mound, the Seattle Mariners tied a season high in consecutive wins last night against the Angels. Tonight, they will turn to potential All-Star Logan Gilbert to try wrap up a series win and pick up their season-best fifth straight win.
In last night’s series opener, Chris Flexen pitched five solid innings before running into a little trouble in the sixth, and from there, the bullpen closed the deal in a 4-3 win.
This week, Seattle has allowed just six runs in four games, and they have gotten some helpful contributions at the plate as well. A real challenge is ahead tonight, however, with pitcher Patrick Sandoval facing the Mariners again a week after an outstanding outing in Seattle.

Steady Gilbert Set for Another Strong Outing on the Road?
While this season hasn’t quite panned out as expected so far for Seattle, Gilbert has built off of the valuable experience he gained as a rookie last season, when he made 24 starts for a Mariners team that came agonizingly close to ending the franchise’s long playoff drought.
While reigning AL Cy Young Award winner Robbie Ray has taken a while to find his groove in Seattle, and Chris Flexen and Marco Gonzales are a combined 7-15 after being Seattle’s two best starting pitchers last season, Gilbert has been a pretty consistent performer since the start of the season.
So far this season, the 25-year-old righty has gone at least five innings in every start, and he has given up more than three runs only twice.
Since giving up four runs in back-to-back starts against the Phillies and Rays, Gilbert has seven straight quality starts. In that stretch, he is 3-2 with a 2.40 ERA and has given up just 35 hits, nine walks, and 13 runs (12 earned) and struck out 40 in 45 innings.
Another strong outing should be expected tonight in Anaheim, based on his recent form and his splits in away and night games.
2022 Season Splits for Logan Gilbert
- Home (six starts): 3-2, 2.27 ERA, .217 OBA
- Away (eight starts): 4-1, 2.28 ERA, .201 OBA
- Day (six starts): 2-2, 2.94 ERA, .182 OBA
- Night (eight starts): 5-1, 1.82 ERA, .225 OBA
This past Sunday, he allowed just two runs and four hits and struck out six (with no walks) against the Angels, but the Mariners managed just two hits in a 4-0 shutout loss.
Run support will ultimately be the key to whether or not Gilbert and the Mariners come away victorious in this matchup.
While the Mariners have had their issues offensively, they have done a pretty decent job overall of giving Gilbert support, scoring four or more runs in 11 of his starts. In those 11 starts, Seattle is 9-2, and Gilbert has a 7-1 record. In the three starts he hasn’t gotten that level of support, the Mariners lost each time, and he has an 0-2 record.

For all of the talk about Gilbert, Sandoval has had a nice little breakout season, and he is coming off of two good outings against the Mets and Mariners.
Run support is a big factor in how things go in his starts as well. When the Angels have scored four or more runs in his starts, he is 3-0, and the Angels are 7-2. His losses have come in the two starts in which they failed to score at least four runs.
Neither team is producing at optimal levels at the moment, but in a game that is likely to be close, I’m liking the value with the Mariners, as the Angels are just 1-11 in their last 12 games decided by one or two runs.
This is not one of those games to really throw much into, because you never know what you are going to get with these two teams. But the Mariners have a nice little run going, and so does Gilbert, and there’s a lot of value in backing the road team in this one if you can get a number around the one above.
