See Picks & Statistics For The GameAfter extending their hot and San Diego’s cold streak, the Seattle Mariners will be looking to leave Petco Park with a two-game sweep as they take on the Padres this afternoon.
Yesterday, the Mariners pounded out a dozen hits and plated eight runs, and Chris Flexen pitched 6.2 shutout innings to collect his third straight win as Seattle cruised to an 8-2 victory.
The Mariners are currently one of the hottest teams in baseball, as they have now won 11 of their last 14 games. The Padres are on the opposite end of the spectrum, as yesterday’s loss was their seventh in their last nine games.
With the Dodgers now four and a half games out front in the NL West and the Padres facing a four-game series against the Giants later this week, the home team could really use a win in this matchup.
But their bats will have to solve rising star Logan Gilbert, who will be in pursuit of his 10th win of the season and is trying to muscle his way into serious AL Cy Young Award consideration as the All-Star break approaches.

Can San Diego Get Going Against Gilbert?
Star slugger Fernando Tatis Jr. is still weeks away from making his 2022 debut, but the Padres could certainly use him right about now.
San Diego has been held to two or fewer runs four times in six games, and they are hitting just .224 and have scored just 14 runs in that stretch.
In yesterday’s game, the Padres were held scoreless until Trent Grisham’s two-run homer in the ninth inning, and they were 0-6 with runners in scoring position.
The Padres are hitting just .175 (7 for 40) with runners in scoring position over their last six games, with three of those hits coming in one game. This is quite the drop-off, as they are hitting .262 with runners in scoring position for the season.
Will things get better against Gilbert? Gilbert has allowed three or more runs eight times in his last 11 starts, and he allowed 17 hits in his two most recent starts.
And for the season, opponents are hitting .267 (16 for 60) against him with runners in scoring position and .281 (9 for 32) with runners in scoring position and two outs.
But form and numbers aren’t overly encouraging for San Diego. While they are hitting .254 and average over five runs per game on the road, they are hitting just .224 and average just 3.74 runs per game at home.
Even if the Padres do get things turned in the right direction against Gilbert, he should feel good about the run support he will get. The Mariners are 6-1 in Gilbert’s last seven starts and are 11-5 in his starts this season, including an 11-2 mark when they score at least four runs.
Seattle Mariners vs. San Diego Padres Prediction and Best Bets
Mariners vs. Padres Prediction: Mariners to win
Mariners vs. Padres Best Bets: Mariners ML (+116 at BetOnline)
Clevinger is coming off of his best start of the season, as he allowed one hit and one walk and struck out six in six shutout innings in a win over the Arizona Diamondbacks this past Wednesday.
But the Mariners are a confident bunch at the moment, and they are great value for the win here against a team that is currently struggling mightily at the plate.
