See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe Seattle Mariners will travel to Boston to begin a 4-game series on Thursday night. This is the first meeting of the season between the two teams.
The Red Sox are coming off a series victory against the AL West leading Houston Astros. The pitching for Boston was outstanding in the finale of that series. Nick Pivetta tossed 9 innings of two-hit baseball to give the Sox their 5th win in the last 8 games.
The Mariners lost their last series to the Toronto Blue Jays, but managed to pull out a victory in the series finale Wednesday afternoon.
Both teams enter 5-5 in their last 10 games. They both sit in 4th place in their divisions, and both are looking for a spark to turn their seasons around. Starting pitching will be the story on Thursday night, as both men who take the hill have found early season success.

Rich Hill to Outduel George Kirby
Rich Hill has bounced around the Major Leagues since 2005. The 42 year old veteran is in his third stint with the Red Sox. Since making his return this season, he has a 2.89 ERA and is striking out 0.75 batters per inning.
George Kirby is on the opposite side of the spectrum. The 24 year old rookie is making his third career start tonight, and does not have a decision on his record. In his two starts this season, he has only allowed 1 earned run to cross the plate. He has also struck out 8 through 10 innings of work.
The storyline heading into Thursday night will be the duel on the mound between a veteran who has been around for 17 years, and a rookie making his third start in the big leagues.
I would have to give the edge to the veteran in this case. Kirby wasn’t as impressive in his second start 5 days ago. He only lasted 4 innings and struck out 1 batter. As for Hill, he was solid in his last start, lasting 6 innings and only allowing 2 runs.
The Mariners have lost each of their last six games following a win. They can’t seem to string wins together. It doesn’t help that they will be on the road in a hostile environment Thursday.
Seattle Mariners vs. Boston Red Sox Prediction and Best Bets
Mariners vs. Red Sox Prediction: Red Sox to win
Mariners vs. Red Sox Best Bets: Red Sox -1.5 (+172 at BetOnline) and Under 8.5 (-115)
The Sox have the advantage in many ways on Thursday. First, they send a veteran pitcher to the mound. Second, they play at home without having to travel from their last series. Lastly, Seattle isn’t stringing wins together and has struggled against solid pitching as of late.
As far as the Under, I don’t expect a lot of runs for either side. Both pitchers should be able to pitch late into the game and limit scoring opportunities. A 3-2 final score would be my guess in a game highlighted by a unique pitching matchup.
