Yesterday’s win was crucial for the Yankees after being outscored 11-7 by the Mariners in the first two games of the series. New York didn’t look back after Aaron Judge recorded a two-run homer in the first inning as the club’s pitching staff held Seattle off the board until the eighth inning.
It’s going to be interesting to see if the Yankees get off to a similar start. They also led 2-0 following the first inning of the series opener but let victory slip through their grasp as they allowed four unanswered runs in the ninth.
Getting off to a strong start might not be easy, though, considering how well the Mariners’ Luis Castillo has pitched this season. After a rocky start to the year, the three-time MLB All-Star hurler has turned things around, going 4-1 with a 1.86 ERA and 39 strikeouts across 38 2/3 innings in his last six starts.
The 31-year-old veteran also owns a 1-2 record with a 3.80 ERA and 21 strikeouts in four career trips to Yankee Stadium.
Mariners RHP Luis Castillo has been in Cy Young form over the last few weeks.
On the other hand, let’s not act as if Luis Gil hasn’t been one of the MLB’s most dominant pitchers after missing last season due to Tommy John surgery recovery.
The Dominican heat-thrower has pitched his way to a 5-1 record, 2.39 ERA, and 1.082 WHIP while averaging 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings through nine starts. He’s also won each of his last four appearances, allowing one or zero runs in each showing.
Additionally, Gil has yet to lose at home in 2024, going 3-0 with a minuscule 1.64 ERA in four starts at Yankee Stadium.
Unsurprisingly, the Yankees’ batters play confidently whenever Gil takes to the mound, proven by their averaging 8.7 runs in his last three appearances. For comparison, the Mariners scored an average of 4.3 runs in Castillo’s last three starts.

After picking up a much-needed win on Wednesday, I’m taking the Yankees to win today. New York finally has momentum under its wings and will likely be playing confidently due to Gil’s excellent play. The Mariners won’t go down without a fight, but it’s clear that the Yankees are in control now, making it the latter’s game to lose.
I’m also willing to take the Yankees to cover the 1.5-run line. After all, they own the eighth-best success rate (53.2%) at covering the run line when playing with the same amount of rest as their opponent. They’re also 24-18 ATS against fellow AL clubs this season, whereas the Mariners are 13-19 ATS in that regard.
Considering how the Bronx Bombers are outscoring their opponents by a 4.5-run average in Gil’s last four starts, I like the plus-money here.

As mentioned earlier, Gil is averaging a blistering 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings in nine starts this season. The 25-year-old is now coming off his best performance to date after striking out a whopping 14 batters in Saturday’s victory over the Chicago White Sox. He now has the benefit of facing the Mariners, who are averaging an MLB-worst 10.2 Ks per game.
Considering how Seattle has struck out at least 11 times in three of the last four games, I expect big things from Gil this afternoon.
