See Picks & Statistics For The GameTonight, two pitchers whose records could use a little polishing match up as the St. Louis Cardinals welcome the Miami Marlins to Busch Stadium to open a three-game series.
Cardinals hurler Adam Wainwright has not picked up a win since May 20, while Pablo Lopez’s win in his most recent start last week was his first since May 7.
Both of these teams enter this week after losing a series at home over the weekend. For the Marlins, a home series loss to the NL East-leading New York Mets was no real surprise, though they lost Friday with NL Cy Young Award favorite Sandy Alcantara on the mound.
The Cardinals, however, suffered a very surprising series loss to the rival Chicago Cubs, who entered the series with one of the poorest road records in the big leagues.

Will Wainwright’s Winless Run End Tonight at Home?
Just because Lopez and Wainwright haven’t been credited with many wins recently doesn’t mean that their performances have been completely lacking or their teams have been short on success.
The Marlins are 3-1 in Lopez’s four starts in June, while the Cardinals are 4-1 in the five games that Wainwright has started since he beat the Pirates in Pittsburgh on May 20.
That said, Wainwright gave up four runs in each of his previous two starts, and he lasted only 4.2 innings and allowed multiple homers in a game for the first time this season against the Milwaukee Brewers this past Wednesday.
For a pitcher who has allowed 20+ homers in a season only three times in an MLB career that began in 2005, multi-homer games are pretty infrequent. In fact, this was the first one since he allowed two against the Brewers on September 23 last year.
Last season, Wainwright allowed multiple homers in a game four times. In the starts that followed each instance, he was 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA, and the Cardinals posted a 3-1 record. Notably, he allowed just two homers total in those four starts.
Miami Marlins vs. St. Louis Cardinals Prediction and Best Bets
Marlins vs. Cardinals Prediction: Cardinals to win
Marlins vs. Cardinals Best Bets: Cardinals ML (-130 at BetOnline & Bovada Sportsbook) & Cardinals -1.5 (+155 at Bovada Sportsbook, BetUS & MyBookie)
This season, the Cardinals are 9-5 in Wainwright’s starts. Of those nine wins, six have been by multiple runs.
Only the Tampa Bay Rays (15-14) and Toronto Blue Jays (17-11) have played as many or more one-run games than the Marlins (11-17) this season, so backing the Cardinals to cover the run line is certainly a risk.
But at this number, it is well worth the risk, especially when eight of the Marlins’ 11 losses this month have been by multiple runs and when the Cardinals have won by 2+ runs each of the six times that they have won following a one-run loss this season.
