Mets vs. Braves Betting (Sept. 30): Which Club Takes One Step Closer to Clinching the NL East?

The 2022 MLB season is wrapping up as the postseason is right around the corner. There are still several important games left on the schedule, including a three-game series that begins on Friday, Sept. 30 between the New York Mets (98-58) and Atlanta Braves (97-59).

Braves and Mets should be a lot of fun.

The Mets have been alternating wins and losses over their last six games. They did score a 5-4 walk-off victory over the Miami Marlins on Wednesday and must build off that success on Friday if they want to lock up the division.

Meanwhile, the Braves have a decent bit of momentum heading into a series that likely decides the NL East winner. Atlanta was on a four-game winning streak before losing 3-2 to the Washington Nationals on Wednesday via walk-off, so only time will tell if Brian Snitker’s club bounces back.

The Mets are sending Jacob deGrom to the mound for this meeting while the Braves are countering New York’s ace with the always reliable Max Fried.

The Mets and Braves have previously met 16 times this season and everything has been fairly even. New York has won nine of those games, however, it was Atlanta that won the most recent series 3-1 back in August.

Despite winning fewer games, it’s been the Braves who have scored more runs, outscoring the Mets 76-67 over that 16-game stretch.

Normally, a match against deGrom would be a death sentence for most teams’ offense. Fortunately for the Braves, the two-time NL Cy Young winner hasn’t been his usual self lately.

In his last three starts this month, deGrom has gone 0-2 while allowing 11 earned runs on 15 hits for a 6.60 ERA. While he does have 28 strikeouts over that span, it doesn’t erase the fact that the 34-year-old hasn’t made it beyond the fifth inning in his last two outings.

On the flip side, Max Fried is also 0-2 in his last three starts. The only difference is that those losses came due to a lack of offensive support. Fried only has a 2.65 ERA in that trio of starts and even struck out eight batters over five innings in his last outing against the Philadelphia Phillies on Sept. 22.

Even if the Mets offense is clicking right now, I have faith in Fried. He held them to two runs on four hits in his last game against them (Aug. 18) and is 2-2 with a 3.00 ERA in four appearances versus New York this season.

Throw in the fact that the Braves are 15-4 in their last 19 home games and it isn’t hard to like Atlanta pulling off an upset here. While the series could go either way, I expect the Braves to set the tone of the series with a victory on Friday, meaning taking them at +108 on the moneyline is a solid idea.

The two sides have also combined for over 6.5 runs in eight of their last 10 meetings this season, which is why I’m also recommending backing the over here.
