This weekend’s series in Philadelphia may not go the same way, but tonight’s series opener should with Aaron Nola and Chris Bassitt on the mound at Citizens Bank Park.

Bassitt, Nola Put Strong Streaks on the Line
Both Chris Bassitt and Aaron Nola pitched and pitched well in last weekend’s series, but only Bassitt came away with a win.
Bassitt tossed five shutout innings last Sunday as the NL East leaders captured the series with a 6-0 win. The veteran righty has not allowed an earned run in three August starts. Also, in his last four away starts, he is 3-0 with a 2.77 ERA.
Nola, meanwhile, took a hard-luck loss last Saturday. In eight excellent innings, he allowed just one run, four hits, and one walk and struck out eight.
But that one run he allowed was one too many, however. Jacob deGrom and the Mets bullpen allowed just three hits, two walks, and no runs in a 1-0 win. That outing was the eighth time this season that Nola has pitched 7+ innings and allowed fewer than two runs.
However, it must be noted that the Phillies are just 4-4 in those eight games. Nola has been the master of his own demise a number of times this season, certainly. But he and the Phillies would have a few more wins with even a handful more runs.
That hasn’t been so much of a concern recently, as the Phils have won 15 of their last 20 games. But in the five losses in that stretch, they scored one run once and were shut out the other four times, including Wednesday against the Cincinnati Reds.
With the run that Bassitt is on in August, Nola could see another outstanding outing could end in frustration tonight.
New York Mets vs. Philadelphia Phillies Prediction and Picks
Mets vs. Phillies Prediction: Phillies to win
Mets vs. Phillies Picks: Phillies ML (Best Value: -120 at BetOnline & BetMGM) & Mets/Phillies under 7.5 (Best Value: -105 at Bovada Sportsbook, BetOnline & BetMGM)
Bassitt has a 4.24 ERA on the road, and Nola has a 4.21 ERA at home. But they are both pitching well at the moment, and I like that to continue in tonight’s matchup.
The Mets continue to be the league’s best at bouncing back from losses. In that scenario, they are 32-10 (.762), while the Phillies are under .500 following a loss.
But I’m backing Nola to finally have a little luck against the Mets after failing to win any of his first four starts against them this season. He has pitched well enough to win three of those starts, and he will finally get rewarded for doing so again.
