Even though it’s still mid-August, you will no longer find AL Central futures odds among MLB betting odds, as the Chicago White Sox will win that division handily barring a collapse of the most epic proportions. There’s a good chance that the NL Central could join those ranks before September, with the Milwaukee Brewers currently 7.5 games ahead of the Cincinnati Reds entering today. But even though there is not much of a division race at the moment, today’s Brewers-Cardinals game is a must-see matchup because it features two of the league’s hottest teams.
The Cardinals have won eight of nine games to gain some measure of respectability. If they want to continue to make a push they have to be able to beat the division’s best team. The Cardinals have not gained any real ground in the NL Central thanks to the Brewers staying hot in the second half, but they are inching their way up the NL Wild Card standings.

Milwaukee Brewers vs. St. Louis Cardinals Betting Outlook
Milwaukee Showing No Sign of Letting Up
The Brewers are now on pace to set a franchise record for wins, and there is a lot to like about this team. They pitch well, and their offense has gotten better as the season has progressed. And there are encouraging signs for former MVP Christian Yelich, who has had little go his way since tearing it up in Milwaukee in 2018 and 2019. Yelich has hits in five straight games and is hitting .350 (7 for 20) in that span, raising his average from .226 to .236.
These teams have played just two series against each other so far and have split the six games played. They are going to be seeing a lot of each other between now and the end of the season, and this is a great chance for the Brewers to bury the Cardinals before they become a real nuisance. Milwaukee is 40-20 on the road this season, which is tops in the league.
St. Louis Still Has a Lot to Prove
The Cardinals have beaten up on bad teams to become relevant again. This is a series to make a statement. When you look at their schedule, you can’t write them off too quickly because they have lots of games against the Brewers and Reds. They also have a slew of potential easy wins against the Cubs and Pirates too. They are interesting, for now.
All season long it has been a struggle for the Cardinals to generate offense. They are in for a real test against one of MLB’s top pitching staffs.
Corbin Burnes Home vs. Away
- Home: 3-4, 2.38 ERA, 64.1 IP, 92 Ks, 14 BBs
- Away: 4-0, 2.06 ERA, 56.2 IP, 80 Ks, 7 BBs
Adam Wainwright Home vs Away
- Home: 6-4, 2.78 ERA, 94 IP, 85 Ks, 19 BBs
- Away: 5-2, 4.12 ERA, 54.2, 52 Ks, 18 BBs
Burnes has been sizzling most of the season and is coming off of his best start of the year. Last time out, he held the Cubs to only four hits with 15 Ks and no walks over eight innings. His road stats make him tough to fade too.
Wainwright has had an impressive season. His home splits are great, and he is also coming off of his best start of the year. Against the Pirates, he tossed a complete game shutout, with just two hits allowed. Both pitchers are in great form.
Brewers vs. Cardinals August 17 Best Bet
Brewers -1.5
I love that “Waino” is having a renaissance but I still think Burnes gives the Brewers more of an edge and I love when they have an off day to reset their bullpen. The Cards have a nice lineup on paper but it is the Brewers that have been actually producing.
