The MLB Trade deadline is quickly approaching as we have just over 24 hours left for teams to submit their moves. It all comes to a close on Tuesday, July 30th at 6:00pm Eastern, and any trade must be signed and submitted before then in order to go into effect for the remainder of the 2024 MLB Season.
This page will aim to keep you up to date on trades that have already been made, potential rumors that are swirling around the league, and make you aware of the biggest moves of the deadline. We’ve already had some big names change uniforms in Randy Arozarena and Christopher Morel, but let’s take a look at all the deals so far!
Live updates are at the bottom of the article.
MLB Trade Deadline 2024
Done Deals of the Deadline
Below are some of the biggest acquisitions that have already happened so far this year.
-
RHP Aaron Civale
Back on July 3rd, the Rays traded right handed pitcher Aaron Civale to the Milwaukee Brewers in order to bump up the NL Central leading rotation. The Rays received a 20 year old SS prospect, Gregory Barrios, who is ranked at the Rays’ #19 prospect by MLB Pipeline. Since joining the Brewers, Civale is 0-1 with a 4.29 ERA and a 1.43 WHIP in 4 starts.
-
OF Randy Arozarena
This might be the biggest acquisition of the deadline so far, as the Rays sent their All Star outfielder to the Seattle Mariners. Arozarena immediately improves the Mariner’s bats who have struggled this season, and increases their chances of making a legitimate playoff push. The trade did not come lightly, as the Mariners shipped OF Aidan Smith and RHP Brody Hopins to Tampa, along with a player to be named later. Smith and Hopkins rank 12th and 22nd as prospects in the Mariners’ system. Arozarena has made an immediate impact for Seattle with Juilio Rodriguez on the IL.
-
LHP James Paxton
The Dodgers traded lefty James Paxton back to Boston as Clayton Kershaw and Tyler Glasnow are both healthy and in the rotation. Paxton previously pitched for Boston in 2023, posting a 7-5 record with a 4.50 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 19 starts. Despite his 8-2 record this year for the Dodgers, Paxton has a 4.43 ERA and a 1.46 WHIP. Ironically, his most recent start was a win against the Red Sox on July 21st, just 5 days before he was traded. Paxton will immediately be in the Red Sox rotation, and is slated to get his first start tomorrow night at Fenway, pitching against his former team, the Seattle Mariners. In return for Paxton, the Dodgers acquired 17 year old shortstop, Moises Bolivar.
-
OF Austin Hays
The Orioles shipped OF Austin Hays to Philadelphia, and in return acquired RHP Seranthony Domínguez and OF Cristian Pache. Now, both World Series contenders seems to come out very pleased with this trade. The Phillies added depth to an already deep outfield, as well as some beef to their hitting lineup. On the other side, the Orioles added to their bullpen, which will come in handy for the playoffs, and acquired a former top MLB Prospect in Pache. Overall, both teams won this trade in my opinion.
-
INF/OF Jazz Chisholm Jr.
One of the biggest names in baseball joined one of the biggest names in all of sports, as Jazz Chisholm was traded to the New York Yankees. The utility man can adapt to fit plenty of New York’s needs, as he can play in the outfield or 2nd base. The Yankees had to send 3 minor leaguers down to Miami in order to acquire Chisholm, but I’m sure they feel it was worth it. Chisholm had a single, stolen base, and scored a run in his Yankee debut at Fenway Park last night.
-
3B Christopher Morel
-
3B Isaac Paredes
The Cubs and Rays essentially traded third basemen in their trade, although the Cubs also send 2 prospects as well. After sending plenty of players to other teams, it was a nice change of pace to see the Rays find a big name of their own to bring home. Isaac Paredes was a 2024 All Star, so the Cubbies are certainly boosting their bats with the move, as Morel is not having the same season he did in 2023.
-
RHP Michael Lorenzen
The Royals made a serious move to boost their starting rotation as they traded for Michael Lorenzen from the Rangers. Lorenzen allowed 2 or fewer runs in 12 of 18 starts this year for Texas, and will immediately fill in for Alec March, who is likely headed back to the bullpen. Lorenzen becomes a much needed arm to round out the Royals rotation for the rest of the season.
- Cole Ragans
- Brady Singer
- Seth Lugo
- Michael Wacha
- Michael Lorenzen
I’m not sure there is a team in the MLB that has a better 5 man rotation.
Other MLB Trades
- RHP Zach Eflin – Traded to Baltimore Orioles
- OF Jesse Winker – Traded to New York Mets
- C Danny Jansen – Traded to Toronto Blue Jays
- RHP Yimi Garcia – Traded to Seattle Mariners
- LHP A.J. Puk – Traded to Arizona Diamondbacks
- INF Ty France – Traded to Cincinnati Reds
- C Carson Kelly – Traded to Texas Rangers
While there were obviously some other trades that went through, these are the acquisitions involving some more well known players around the MLB. And of course, the day is not over yet. Plenty of trades could still go through, and of course, there are plenty of rumors to discuss as well.
MLB Trade Deadline Rumors
Potentially the biggest name still being talked about in terms of the being traded is LHP Blake Snell. He’s pitched well for the Giants this season, and is coming off an incredible outing. He pitched 6 shutout innings against the Rockies, allowing just 2 hits and striking out 15 batters over his 18 recorded outs. That is insane. The man clearly still has the stuff, and it will interesting to see if any potential buyers reach out about his status.
It is rumored that the Padres have reached out looking for a reunion with Snell, but also have interest in Detroit’s starter, Jack Flaherty who could be on the move. Erick Fedde of the White Sox is rumored to being pursued by the Cardinals who are looking to add a starter to their rotation.
As always, before placing your bets, pay attention and be sure you know who is still on the roster. Players can be traded mid-game which will really screw with the outcome!
