Oakland A’s vs Seattle Mariners Betting Preview (July 22): Flexen Seeks 10th Win as Big AL West Series Starts in Seattle

The AL West is very interesting this season. The Houston Astros and Oakland A’s look like definite playoff contenders and are the MLB betting favorites at the top of the division. But the Seattle Mariners have been a major surprise, and the Los Angeles Angels have managed to hang around while waiting on Mike Trout to return.
Things will get even more intriguing if the A’s struggle in their four-game series in Seattle. They start the series just 3.5 games up on the M’s, and the easy math says a sweep would have them swap their places.
If that were to happen, it would be interesting to see what each team might do next. Might Seattle forget about punting this season and try and reinforce for a playoff run? Would Oakland try and regroup, maybe sell off a pitcher or two? These games just before the trade deadline just have so much more at stake.
These teams have only played each other 6 times this season, splitting their meetings 3-3. From here on out, they are going to be seeing each other a lot. This just kicks that off.

Oakland A’s vs Seattle Mariners MLB Betting Outlook
Are the A’s a Contender or Pretender?
That is a question I have been trying to answer all season. I like their pitching, but now of their arms really dominate. They just seem to have five starters who are good enough to be in any team’s rotation. Their lineup is solid, but until 3B Matt Chapman starts hitting, they are definitely not an upper-tier offensive club. And even if/when he does, they do not have bats like the Astros, Red Sox, or Blue Jays
At this stage of the season, I thought we would be sure that Oakland was going to the playoffs. Now I am not so sure. They do start the series with a little momentum, however. They just put the Angels in their place, outscoring them 10-1 over the last two games.
Mariners in a Tricky Spot as August Approaches
The Mariners were supposed to win with the likes of Kyle Lewis and Dylan Moore…in 2025. Instead, their success to date has made them a viable playoff contender, right now. The smart course of action seems to be to trade off the veterans and continue to build, but GMs and teams do not always do the “smart thing”. The key for Seattle has been outfielder Mitch Haniger. He is having a great season.
Seattle has had lots of success winning close games so far this season. They are 20-8 in one-run games. They are actually -52 runs on the season though, worse than the Angels who are under .500 and below them in the standings. That is why this club is hard to believe in despite their record. They have been profitable from an MLB betting standpoint but picking the right spots is tough.
Sean Manaea Home vs Away
- Home: 4-2, 3.34 ERA, 64.2 IP, 65 Ks, 12 BBs
- Away: 2-4, 3.20 ERA, 45 IP, 50 Ks, 13 BBs
Chris Flexen Home vs Away
- Home: 6-2, 1.76 ERA, 61.1 IP, 43 Ks, 10 BBs
- Away: 3-1, 5.92 ERA, 38 IP, 22 Ks, 10 BBs
Flexen has never had this kind of success in the Majors or pitched this much in the big leagues. That might mean a big fade is coming, but those home splits definitely catch your eye. I have been a big fan of Manaea for a while now. His record might just be 6-6, but the A’s are 12-7 in his starts. He has been very consistent this season, even though he got off to a slow start.

Seattle Mariners ML
It is hard not to like the Mariners at home with Flexen on the hill. The Mariners have won five of his last six starts, and even though a fade is likely over the rest of the summer, he should still be rejuvenated by the All-Star break for now. This one might be low-scoring as I think Manaea will pitch well too. The under might definitely be in play with a couple of lineups that can be easy to navigate.
