Padres vs Cardinals Predictions & MLB Picks Today (8/29)
After the Padres opened the series with back-to-back wins, the Cardinals got some revenge with Wednesday’s 4-3 victory.
The Padres took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but it was all Cardinals for the rest of the way. With the game tied 3-3 in the bottom of the ninth, St. Louis third baseman Nolan Arenado smacked a single to center to score Masyn Winn for the walk-off victory.
Having said that, time will tell if the home team has what it takes to win again. After all, August has been rough for a St. Louis club that has only won consecutive outings three times in the last 29 days, playing to a 10-15 SU record along the way.
And while the Padres lost less than 24 hours ago, they haven’t lost back-to-back games since before the MLB All-Star Break. They’ve been one of the hottest teams since the ASG festivities, boasting an MLB-leading 74.3% win percentage since July 17.
The Padres are 26-9 SU without back-to-back losses in their last 35 games.
Some trends are working in San Diego’s favor ahead of today’s series finale. For starters, the Padres are 15-5 SU across their last 20 road games while the Cardinals have dropped 12 of their last 20 home games. The visitors are also a solid 16-13 SU as the road favorite this season with that 55.2% success rate ranking 12th-best in the Majors.
There’s also the fact that the Padres are 17-9 SU when Michael King starts a game in 2024. The veteran right-handed hurler also hasn’t lost a road start since April 23, going 6-0 with a 2.17 ERA and 52 strikeouts across 54 innings in his last seven away appearances.
Conversely, Cardinals RHP Sonny Gray is hoping to avoid ending August on a losing streak. The three-time All-Star pitcher has lost each of his last three starts while surrendering 13 earned runs and six homers on 19 hits across 16 innings — good for a 7.31 ERA.
It doesn’t help that the Cardinals only scored two runs in those contests, highlighting how their bats tend to play without confidence when Gray is on the mound.
Will Cardinals RHP Sonny Gray break out of his slump this afternoon?
Even though the Cardinals stood tall yesterday, I’m taking the Padres today. San Diego just doesn’t lose when King is on the mound in a road situation, whereas St. Louis can’t seem to buy a win during Gray’s starts. Considering just how good they’ve been since the All-Star Break and their plethora of recent road success, this afternoon’s affair is the Padres’ to lose.
With that in mind, I’ll take the Padres on the run line, too. They opened the series with back-to-back multi-run wins, proving that they can cover against the Cardinals. Additionally, St. Louis has been outscored by an average of four runs in Gray’s last three starts. That’s without mentioning how San Diego boasts a top-five road offense.
In other words, the Padres could win today by a decent margin.

Best Padres vs Cardinals MLB Player Prop (8/29)
Sticking with the plus-money trend, I’m eyeing Sonny Gray o2.5 earned runs (+104) for the best Padres vs. Cardinals MLB player prop.

Gray has had a solid career, but his recent performances haven’t been up to his usual standards. The 34-year-old veteran has pitched to a 5.86 ERA in his last 10 starts, giving up 38 earned runs on 67 hits across 58 1/3 innings. He surrendered over 2.5 earned runs in seven of those appearances, including when he allowed five in six innings during last week’s 6-0 loss to the Minnesota Twins.
After the Cardinals allowed seven runs twice in this series’ first three games, I’m confident in the Over on this prop.
Best Padres vs. Cardinals Prop Bet: Sonny Gray o2.5 Earned Runs (+104)
