Padres vs Dodgers Prediction & MLB Picks Today (4/12): NL West Rivalry Resumes

Tonight’s clash is the first time that the Padres and Dodgers are meeting since opening the campaign in Seoul. LA got things started with a hard-fought 5-2 victory in the first game, however, it was San Diego that got revenge in the form of a 15-11 win the following day.

Nevertheless, these NL West rivals have been heading in opposite directions since their last encounter. The Padres are an uninspiring 5-7 SU in their last 12 outings, which has a lot to do with an inconsistent offense. Although San Diego averages the 10th-most runs in the Majors, Mike Shildt’s club has scored two or fewer runs five times in the last nine outings, losing each of those contests.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers don’t have scoring issues as they average 5.4 runs per game (8th), which jumps up to 5.9 at Dodger Stadium (6th). They’ve scored no fewer than five runs in each of their home games thus far, leaving time to tell if that trend continues tonight.

Mookie Betts and Teoscar Hernandez have been the Dodgers’ best players at home thus far, having tallied five and four homers, respectively.

It’s hard to ignore how lopsided this NL West rivalry has been lately. After all, the Dodgers are an impressive 10-4 SU in their last 14 meetings with the Padres dating back to the 2023 campaign.

That’s without mentioning how San Diego struggles to face LA on the road, having dropped 14 of its last 20 trips to Dodger Stadium. What’s even more mind-blowing is that each of those victories came by multiple runs.

Needless to say, the Padres need Michael King to continue his hot start on the mound. The former 2016 12th-rounder is 2-0 with a 3.14 ERA and 15 strikeouts across 14 1/3 innings this season. Having said that, King did allow three runs and a homer on four hits when he faced the Dodgers in relief during the aforementioned 15-11 victory.

Meanwhile, the Dodgers are turning back to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who allowed five earned runs in one inning in his MLB debut against the Padres. Yamamoto has turned things around since then, though, pitching 10 run-less innings with 13 strikeouts in his last two starts.

For tonight’s prediction, I’m taking the Dodgers to win. Even though the Padres are coming off a win, they’ve only won consecutive outings once this season. The Dodgers have been terrific at home in 2024 and have dominated their NL West rival at Dodger Stadium. As long as Yamamoto continues to pitch well, it’s LA’s game to lose.

Furthermore, let’s take the Dodgers to cover the run line. Again, each of LA’s last 14 home wins over San Diego came by two or more victories. Considering how shaky King looked against the Dodgers last month, I could see this game being decided by another wide margin.

I’m feeling a little bit risky with my Padres vs. Dodgers player prop pick, so let’s take Mookie Betts to hit at least one home run (+400).

In my eyes, Betts is due for a home run considering that he’s gone seven straight games without one. Keeping that in mind, six of those games took place on the road. A return home could help Betts given that he has four HRs in his last seven games at Dodger Stadium.

Additionally, Betts has tallied seven HRs in his 13 matchups against the Padres, which includes when he homered off King during the second game of the 2024 season. In other words, look for the former AL MVP to make a massive impact this evening.
