The Padres did a solid job at building up momentum to begin July, winning five of their last six games before the all-star festivities. Meanwhile, the Phillies head into tonight’s contest looking to prevent a three-game losing streak after losing back-to-back contests against the rival Miami Marlins.

Padres vs Phillies Game Preview

Starting this four-game series on the right foot is necessary for both clubs when it comes to their respective playoff hopes. As it stands, the Phillies are currently 0.5 games back from the final National League wild-card spot while the Padres aren’t that much further behind, sitting six games back.

Unfortunately for the Padres, closing that gap could be difficult. After all, they’ve lost five of their previous six road games. While the lone victory during that span was an impressive 12-5 victory over the Cincinnati Reds, the Padres lost the other five away contests by an average of three runs.

That’s not the only negative trend that San Diego is up against in tonight’s Padres vs Phillies matchup. Bob Melvin’s club has also lost six of its last seven games against Philadelphia and only has one victory in its last four trips to Citizens Bank Park.

Having said that, the Phillies haven’t exactly been consistent at home lately. They’ve only won three of their most recent eight outings in the City of Brotherly Love, being held to two or fewer runs in four of those contests.

Another trend worth monitoring is that Phillies starting pitcher Christopher Sanchez is still looking for his first win of the 2023 MLB season. The 26-year-old Dominican hurler is currently 0-2 through his first five starts. While he’s impressed with a 2.84 ERA and 1.026 WHIP over that stretch, the run support hasn’t been there with Philadelphia averaging just 2.6 runs in his starts.

Meanwhile, the Padres could use a rebound performance from Yu Darvish tonight. The five-time MLB All-Star pitched well through the first two months of the schedule but has since been stuck in a rut.

In his last four starts, Darvish is 1-2 with an abysmal 7.17 ERA. Although he’s struck out 21 batters over his last 21 1/3 innings, he’s also given up 10 walks with 17 earned runs on 27 hits during that time.

Nevertheless, Darvish has also pitched to a 2.35 ERA in nine career meetings with the Phillies.

Although the Padres have more recent momentum, I’m taking the Phillies to stand tall at home. San Diego has been shaky on the road and I just can’t bring myself to trust Darvish on the mound. Philadelphia has done well at having its upcoming opponent’s number, giving the home team an advantage as it pursues the final NL playoff spot.

Another solid Padres vs Phillies bet is taking Fernando Tatis Jr. to record 2+ hits at +146 odds. Tatis has done a great job at hitting the ball lately, recording 14 hits with a .400 batting average in 35 at-bats over his last eight games. He finished with multiple hits five times over that stretch, too.

Tatis has also suited up at Citizens Bank Park three times during his young career, recording a pair of hits twice during that span. Knowing that he must step up again to lead his team to victory, look for Tatis’ bat to be active tonight.
