Phillies vs. Giants (September 4): Will Rodon rebound to lead a San Francisco sweep?

The San Francisco Giants need a lot to happen to land a spot in the MLB playoffs this season, but they seem intent on not giving up just yet, if the first two games of their series against the Philadelphia Phillies are any indication.

They carried a seven-game losing streak into this weekend’s series against the visiting Phillies but have won the first two games and will have their ace on the mound as they seek a sweep this afternoon at Oracle Park.

After throttling Philadelphia 13-1 on Friday, things were much tighter yesterday, with all of the scoring in the Giants’ 5-4 win taking place in the first six innings.

After seeing 23 runs be scored in the first two games, will we see fewer runs in the series finale? Carlos Rodon and Ranger Suarez didn’t pitch well when they last took the mound, but that should not be the case in today’s matchup.

Rodon and Suarez both pitched last Monday, and both did not fare well in losses.

Rodon allowed five runs, four hits, and a season high-tying four walks in four innings in a loss to the Padres. Suarez, meanwhile, allowed six runs (two earned), five hits, and two walks as the Phillies squandered an early 7-0 lead in a loss to the Diamondbacks.

We should see both hurlers perform better in this afternoon’s matchup, based on relevant splits and how they have pitched after their poorer outings for the most part.
