See Picks & Statistics For The GameAfter meeting in Philadelphia last weekend, the Philadelphia Phillies and St. Louis Cardinals are facing off for the second straight weekend, this time in St. Louis.
Tonight’s opener at Busch Stadium features the same pitching matchup as last Sunday’s series finale in Philadelphia, with Zack Wheeler on the mound for the Phillies and Adam Wainwright on the hill for the Cardinals.
In Sunday’s showdown, seven shutout innings by Wheeler helped lead the home team to a 4-0 win that wrapped up the series win. What does tonight’s tilt in St. Louis have in store?

Wainwright’s Home Form Tips Scales Towards Cards
Wheeler and the Phillies had the upper hand over Wainwright and the Cardinals last Sunday, but there’s a more than decent chance that tonight’s matchup pans out differently.
Wheeler is 7-1 with a 1.67 ERA and ten quality starts in his last dozen starts, but all of his worst starts in that stretch and almost of his worst starts this season overall have come on the road.
In six road starts in 2022, Wheeler is 2-2 with a 4.45 ERA. By comparison, he is 5-2 with a 1.62 ERA in nine home starts this season.
Wainwright didn’t fare very well at Citizens Bank Park last Sunday, allowing four runs and eight hits, including two homers, in 5.2 innings. But he is much better at home (3-2, 2.25 ERA in seven starts) than on the road (3-4, 4.10 ERA in nine starts), and the Cardinals are 5-2 in his home starts compared to 5-4 in his road starts.
Also, having given up two homers in his previous start bodes rather well for this start, as per a trend that was mentioned here rather recently (Marlins vs. Cardinals, June 27).
Lo and behold, in that game, he was outstanding against the Marlins, allowing seven hits and one walk and striking out nine in seven shutout innings in a 9-0 Cardinals win.
Philadelphia Phillies vs. St. Louis Cardinals Prediction and Best Bets
Phillies vs. Cardinals Prediction: Cardinals to win
Phillies vs. Cardinals Best Bets: Cardinals ML (+110 at Bovada Sportsbook & MyBookie) & Phillies team total under 4 runs (-114 at BetOnline)
The Phillies certainly present a tougher challenge than the Marlins, but the result will be the same as that matchup.
The Cardinals have one of the league’s best home records–their home win percentage of .600 is bested by only the Yankees, Astros, Dodgers, and Mets and equaled by the Braves–and getting them as a home dog tonight presents fantastic value for bettors.
Look for Wainwright to continue his excellent form at home and lead the Cards to the series-opening win in what should be another pretty low-scoring matchup.
