If good pitching is what grabs your interest, then last night’s series opener between the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets would have been perfect for you.

After the Phillies struck first in the top of the first inning and the Mets evened the score in the bottom of the second, no more runs were scored until the tenth, when Philadelphia scored the deciding run in a 2-1, 10-inning win at Citi Field.

For the Phillies, it was their 13th win in their last 15 games, while it ended the Mets’ six-game win streak and was just their third loss in their last 18 games.

Tonight’s matchup should be another enjoyable evening for those who enjoy excellent pitching, with Aaron Nola pitching for Philadelphia and Jacob deGrom on the mound for New York.

Will Phantastic deGrom Phrustrate the Phillies phor the Umpteenth Time?

(I’ll never do that again, until the next time I do it.)

To date, there are seven teams that Jacob deGrom has faced at least ten times. He has had success against most of those teams, with the Cubs (2-3 in ten starts) and Dodgers (0-4 in ten starts) the exceptions.

But his best win percentage (out of that bunch) is against the Phillies, against whom he is 8-1 with a 2.29 ERA in 19 career starts.

His lone loss against Philadelphia came on September 5, 2017, in which he allowed a career-worst nine runs (six earned) and also gave up 10 hits in 3.2 innings in a 9-1 loss. As if a 2.29 ERA wasn’t solid, he has a 1.88 ERA in the other 18 starts.

The Phillies, who are 38-24 following a win this season, have been one of the league’s best teams following a win. Their win percentage of .613 ranks third in MLB behind the Dodgers (56-20, .737) and Yankees (46-25, .648).

But no team has been better following a loss in 2022 than the Mets, who are an extraordinary 30-9 (.769) after taking an L. In their last 11 games following a loss, they are 9-2 (.818).

That kind of rebounding ability hasn’t been seen in New York since Hall of Famer Harry “The Horse” Gallatin, who is the only New York Knick to win an NBA rebounding title, all the way back in 1954.

Speaking of horses, the Mets have one of the best in the business past or present in deGrom, whose 2.50 career ERA is bested by the likes of Clayton Kershaw, Hippo Vaughn, and Hooks Wiltse but beats out Noodles Hahn, Slim Sallee, and Old Hoss Radbourn.

The two-time NL Cy Young winner may not have a nickname like some of the hurlers of yesteryear, but his first two starts have pretty resoundingly washed away concerns of rust or diminished powers from his time on the shelf.

So, good luck to the Phillies, who may be left wishing his return to action had not come until a little bit later, given that they don’t have to face the Mets again in the regular season after next weekend.

Oh, and the run line is the play here, given that 24 of the Mets’ 30 wins following a loss this season (80 percent) have been by 2+ runs and the fact that only 15 of their 73 wins this season (20.5 percent) have been by one run.
